Re: about 285 and AIX 7.1

I have two 285's - one was brand new in a box - £150!! Anyway, they will connect to HMC but as was said - no real support for virtual console plus IBM won't sell the VET code to enable PowerVM. Still if you want virtualisation on it, WPAR's work tho not quite the same - more akin to Solaris Zones......

Re: Out Of Box Experience with AIX

1. ssh is on the second DVD (I think) Pretty sure bash is on there too. 2. ksh is ace! You need to set your editor to vi and all your vi commands work... set -o vi Command history is esc-k, command completion is esc-\, esc-x to delete a character etc....... 3. ssh above includes ssh 4. Aside the fac...

Re: Cheapest POWER5 for LPAR and VIO

Alright... so it can run VM/LPARs but is not licensed to do so (my IBM knowledge is pretty much... lacking)? Have a look at this one: http://cgi.ebay.de/IBM-pSeries-Power5-9117-570-4-core-1-9-APV-AIX-7-1-/400197865755?pt=DE_Technik_Computer_Peripherieger%C3%A4te_PC_Systeme&hash=item5d2da6d11b#h...

No faster then a silver blade 2500. Same cpus.

Yes and I have one of those too. That one has dual procs and 16gb ram, and the Intellistation 285 (bottom of the range) blows it away.

And it's quieter than either too.

Cheapest POWER5 for LPAR and VIO

I want one!

Would it be a P505? Any sources? Cheapest I've seen os $1300 from US, the shipping and VAT would kill it tho. Cheapest I've found in UK is £3300 + VAT - way too much...

Re: T1000

Did it get decommissioned for being broken? Sounds like you may have a motherboard fault or its coming up in diag mode. If its diag mode, you might not see anything for a long time. What do you see on the screen when at the console? Anything? I am told by it's former owner it has a CPU voltage sens...

Re: IBM RS/6000 - 7011-250 - Help me tame this beast :)

The answer to this is cable, cable, cable.

I was using one of those Cisco RJ45 to serial leads - that was the issue, tried with proper serial and null modem adapter and all works as should!

T1000

I've just rescued one from the decomm pile at work, no disk, no ram. Anyway, I have a SAS disk, took a chance and bought some RAM for 50 notes, 4x1g DDR2 all in rank 0 as docs but I can't get it to boot. showfaults shows no faults, RAM is shown in showfru, service processor works fine shows no issue...

Re: Cheap but Powerful UltraSPARC under $500

We have hundreds of V440's are our place - PSU's are always failing and Sun (Oracle) want £700 for a replacement if not under contract!

Also we see a lot of T2000 boards failing so I'd stay clear of those.

Re: Solaris 11 Express is out

I slapped it on my Ultra 45 which as been largely switched off while I toyed with my new toy - an IBM pSeries Intellistation 285.

It has an XVR-2500 and I eventually got it working, but it has mouse artefacts occasionally, and the box is soooo slloww compared with the Intellistation....

Re: IBM RS/6000 - 7011-250 - Help me tame this beast :)

Hello all ! Thank you all very much for your replies. I finally managed to: - get an USB-Serial adapter 100% supported by OSX (connected though an old 25-9 adapter from a serial mouse) - upgrade the ram from 16 to 64 Mb (found a bag of IBM 8Mb parity SIMMs at a flea market) - find a SCSI cdrom will...

On a side note - I was able to compile all of of the components of the Nimbus theme that Open Solaris/Solaris Express had for Solaris 10 Sparc if anyone wants it. Looks nice.

I'd appreciate that mate!
