All good things come to those who wait ;)

The thought of *80* G5 processors per rack is mouth watering....

It'll make disc access faster. Nothing more. I'm all about incremental percentage increases in performance. :) Anyway, thanks for all the links and such. Maybe it'll be cheaper to just get a faster machine. :( Now you're talking ;) I like percentage increases when they reach 3 digits.... go for an ...

.... and shy of an R12k O2, the bottleneck isn't the hard disk at all, it's the processor!

O2 != Origin 3000 :(

I don't think there's a need to worry too much..... I don't think SGI is going anywhere fast, especially as a number of government agencies use their systems in large numbers ;)

Just think of it this way - how much would it cost the government to buy out SGI if necessary? Answer: next to nothing.

Right you are.... the only thing that would improve on the 15K RPM drive is the access time, but I'd be *really* surprised if you'd notice this on an O2.

Will SCO be alive long enough to do any damage to SGI? I mean, they still haven't gone to court with IBM, and I'm sure IBM would even go as far as supporting SGI in their fight, because a victory against ANYONE gives SCO legal standing against the rest. I *really* doubt it! I can't see SCO survivin...

max_impact, if you end up getting something faster, I may can take that other R10K off your hands. Assuming I still need it by then and have available funds. If I could get a replacement at a reasonable price, I'd give the darn thing away ;) Not sure it's compatible with R5k O2 boards, I'm more fam...

I'm looking for a processor upgrade too, if anyone knows of a good source.... I have a slow R10k and want a >200MHz chip.

I've seen two different gige cards in MIPS-based systems so far:

1) BCM5700-based cards
2) Tigon TG3-based cards

Not sure what the differences are, not sure I care.... you plug 'em in and they work :)

Whatever you do ..... *** DON'T *** attempt to clean the compression connectors that the Octane uses with anything solid. You must use gas cleaners to clean those babies as they are very fussy. Largely because about half of their business is with government departments who have continued to use MIPS/IRIX against the odds. Altix may be good for the Intel/Linux world, but it don't scale to 1024 processors (or beyond).

I'm not sure what the answer to that question is, but I will undoubtedly find out in the coming weeks/months as the data we already have is in excess of 4GB.... and that's before we get started! I'm not sure whether that's really important, though. I've compiled both n32 and 64-bit versions of mysql...

I don't suppose there is a VAR or something I could actually visit in person to screw with a machine for a while. (Is there?) I'm sure that a professional company like that would be more than willing to have some place set up to demo their stuff. I'm not 100%, but I don't think so. Sadly, most peop...
