Re: o200 vs sun v120

Well, the 'Slowlaris' line is way too outdated and so are the claims that Linux is somehow more optimized for performance on the same hardware than Solaris. Solaris had some shortcomings in regards to performance in the older releases, but Sun has got its act together with Solaris 10. Solaris 10 bea...

Re: Hah?

no, it's per smp machine - especially not per cluster. Hah? First off both Altix and Origin are *not* SMP machines, they are ccNUMA. Secondly Altix supports only up to 64 processors per cache coherent domain (single box), which is well below 72 processors for Sun Fire boxes and just half the number...

Re: Hah?

seems like this is getting too emotional. let me try again to show why the altix is a 'step ahead'(not everywhere of course): SUN e25k altix -------- ----- max cpu: 72 2048 ram: 576gb 128tb cache: 16mb 9mb i/o: 25.2gb/s na (modular, no midplane) sys. bandwidth: 43.2gb/s 409gb/s, 38.4gb/s xt...

Re: Huh?

No you can not. Point me at a spec sheet or some piece of documentation to proove otherwise. Altix is not domainable period. As a bit of a clarification I understand that you can partition Altix by bricks into independent partitions, but that is very static and primitive compared to Sun domains, wh...

Re: Huh?

sure, the altix has only 4gb/fc, 10gb nic and terrific bandwidth and i/o. of course that's way below sun and surely not usable for 'business computing'. There is nothing special about FC support or 10gb nic's, you can deck out any new Sun server with the same spec HBA's and NIC's. sure but can they...

Re: Hah?

hehe, nice one. but just make a comparison between the altix and a sun box of your choice - sun won't like it :D Hah? Altix machines can be useful in HPTC but are practically useless in business computing where Sun reigns supreme. Severe lack of application is the biggest concern for the Altix plat...

Sun should buy SGI

Let's hope Sun buys SGI and not IBM and definitely not HP. Sun is the only hope if you want to see IRIX in the open, since Sun is the only company out their that is capable of opensourcing IRIX if SGI gets aquired. IBM is not capable of that since unlike Sun it lacks unrestricted rights to UNIX and ...
