Re: Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI
Thanks uunix, that's got it, fonts are back to normal and readable now. PEBKAC error during my "ooo, it's running lets play a little" undoubtedly. Edit: And just in case someone else comes across this - I'd stupidly set the root account language wrong too, which was the "root" (h...

Re: Network traffic
I like to use gkrellm on linux if I have ssh access and X on the client. Gives all the usual telemetry suspects like cpu, mem, swap, load, disk + network. Gives friendly human values like K etc. Otherwise under linux you could use any of these (bmon is nice): https://askubuntu.com/questions/257263/h...

Re: Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI
RE: "paypal will be refunded" - yep, I'd kinda written that one off - and a little later the seller replied to my inquiries and we exchanged a few messages that convinced me he was legit -> once he changed the payment method so no need for paypal + cash I had little to lose :-) Turned out ...

Re: Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI
Thanks Jacques, I do feel a little like I struck gold :-) Some before and after shots of the "big cleaning": Before 1+2: sbefore1.jpg sbefore2.jpg After 1+2: safter1.jpg safter2.jpg Sunlight really changes the green into blue - quite bizarre - it doesn't look that blue in person! So - I'm ...

Re: Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI
Cheers! We just finished bath time to brighten up the skins. I dissembled almost everything and gave it all a good clean - apart from the power supply and underneath the front mainboard. Quite the mess under the rear fan when I took it off, nothing some cotton tips couldn't get to and sort out. Migh...

First personal SGI
First SGI I've used in 20 years hehe.
Going to have some fun with this. My muscle memory for bash (set -o emacs) is strong and results in constant CTRL-U start agains.

Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI
A gentleman kindly dropped this off yesterday. Is a best-parts-from-three mismash the chap had obtained after the science department stopped using them. The gent intended to have a bit of fun with it but after 5 years sitting in a corner of his office and having a young family -> goes up on ebay. fi...

Re: [WTB UK]: Octane2 / "Stealth Octane 2" >=V10, Dual 300, 2GB, 15K Disk
Five stars, will eat here again. But seriously I do appreciate the help you guys have generously given. My bit of backstory: Basically worked on Indys at Uni (OpenInventor C++, Vk, networking), carried on contract working on O2s and Challenge S after that for one of the first (but now defunct) onlin...

Re: [WTB UK]: Octane Dual 300+, 2GB, 15K Disk
See my post above and do a forum search, don't think you'll get a V6/V8 to do 1600x1200 @ 60hz due to pixel clock bug. You'll need to go to v10/v12 or run Mgras with texture ram if you want texturing. I'm in the kitchen cooking so could be wrong, others can verify:) Ah righto, I got confused by the...

Re: [WTB UK]: Octane Dual 300+, 2GB, 15K Disk
Hi all, Thanks Jacques, Jan-Jaap and UUnix. Indeed I'd heard on the grapevine about some pixel clock issues so handy to have info from "them that know". @UUnix - yes, it is a great little monitor - bought two second hand for my sister recently. Sounds like the sensible approach is 1.3 + V8...

[WTB UK]: Octane2 / "Stealth Octane 2" - RESOLVED
Update: Looks like I've managed to pick up something interesting -> hope to be joining the "hinv-erse" soon. Hi all, I looking for a dual proc Octane with minimum a couple of G of ram + 15K disk. Looking to get my old OpenInventor projects up and running + maybe a bit of porting entertainm...

Re: [eBay UK] 2 Tezros, 2 1600SW, Maya...
Oh Chap, well, sort of commiserations (I say sort of, since I can't really mean it, since I did win). Where in the UK are you? Hehe, totally understand. So the fellow had four tezros in total - egads. I'm based in Colchester, so my consolation prize to not winning was not having to take the day off...

Well done uunix
I am the bidder £2500.00 you bid over
Enjoy, I'm super jelly !
That price was as high as I was willing to go. Hope you get some decent use out of them. Now I have to look around to find a relatively decent speed SGI that won't break the bank or need shipping from the US.
