Re: SOLVED: Stoopid Dell monitor
No such luck here - all my equipment but the two SGI is HD15. 13W3 (and big workstations) are quite rare where I live, so finding a commercial adaptor was harder than grabbing the salvaged cable off a dead Sun monitor I found at the University and grafting a VGA connector to the other end. I wish I ...

As long as you're a happy camper...
When my Indy comes home, I'll have to use it with an old 17" SyncMaster 700p CRT...old, failing, but the only POS I own that does SoG. Yeah, I could build a sync separator, but I'm a lazy asshat, was bummed enough having to make a 13W3-HD15 cable

Just a minor malfunction
Still, I'd really try to repair the Sun CRT, that thing has a Trinitron tube

...but the f-in thing's like a five room puzzle, the only way to "solve" it is to break it... Today I gained another tidbit of interesting trivia: what a five-room puzzle is. Man, I love the internet Went after a service manual for that monitor, and I've only found diagrams with no disass...

Re: Stoopid Dell monitor
While you're at it, open the Sun CRT and see if you can find a "Focus" trimpot. It's usually on the side of the flyback transformer (which usually has a red cable coming out of it into the tube) Standard CRT disclaimer: a mishandled CRT *WILL KILL YOU* Don't poke any bits with your fingers...

Re: Talos Secure Workstation
My bet is these disable speculative execution of indirect branches. Of course that, for some niches, security is way more important than raw speed. However, do you have any idea on what the performance impact would be if they forced the BP to never take branches? Also, I was translating the origina...

I wonder whether the tablet uses the handshake lines of the serial port, or just TX and RX

Re: Talos Secure Workstation
Unfortunately in-order CPUs can still speculate on execution; the difference is in how they issue instructions, which can be done speculatively or not, so the POWER6 is probably in the same risk category as the G5. Interesting, thanks for the clarification Interestingly, the RPi cores don't specula...

Re: Talos Secure Workstation
As far as my quasi-layman, noobish understanding goes, the exploit relies on the fact that BP speculation behavior can be known/predicted (that's a recursion!)
With in-order execution, there are no predictions to be made, and as such, no vulnerability.
Am I right or did I go wrong somewhere?

Ooh, I'd never heard about this Philmarillion story, thanks for that entertaining tidbit, @VenomousPinecone We had a way more scary version of Philmarillion at my university's facebook group. Someday a retard claimed to "being stalked and threatened by nazis" and whatnot, made a 200-page l...
