Re: your latest purchase

Octane parts! Going to get this thing running hopefully very soon. Got a frontplane for $75. Not sure if that is cheap or expensive, but it was the lowest I could negotiate.

Re: Octane no power?

Update: Ordered: New frontplane, 3x new 36gb scsi hard disks (got to start somewhere), 13w3 adapter and something else I forgot. Thoughts: Need a monitor of some kind. I'm thinking I will try to use this machine as a podcast machine, or at least work with digital audio. I'm definitely going to do so...

Re: Things to buy....

If space was no option, I'd probably buy an Amiga 1200, an Archimedes of some sort (used loads when I was at school), a BBC Model B, and a ZX80 (my dad nearly acquired one ages ago from work, but they got binned - a pity as they're worth a bit now). Moving into fantasy land, I'd love to find a new ...

Re: Octane no power?

I tried every permutation of boards plugged in. With the motherboard and power supply the fans tickle, but then nothing. Neither switch does anything. I pulled the front plastic off to make sure I could get at the switches properly. I do not have any spare parts at all. I am not in a Current positio...

Re: Octane no power?

1 Pull the psu out and plug it into a wall socket, does it make a nice clear click as the relay switches? 2 with power cord out, pull the drives, any external connections, keyboard, mice, graphics board xio carriers, system board carrier - essentially everything but the psu and frontplane. Does it ...

Octane no power?

Greetings, I have finally gotten around to actually plugging power into my octane. Problem: As soon as I attach the power cable, the power supply fan spins probably 1 revolution, and the drive cage fan spins the same, some things click and then nothing. No lights, no fans, no buttons do anything, ju...

[FOR SALE] Macintosh IIci

I have decided to part with my Machintosh IIci. It does have a failed power supply currently, as far as I can tell. This is a recent occurrence. It was previously working flawlessly. It comes complete with Color CRT Monitor; Original Keyboard/Mouse; Hard Disk Drive (40Mb I think) and working Floppy ...

Re: My first Octane

I wouldn't pull the graphics board unless you need to. Get it tested first. I can send you a bootable drive and graphics cable cheap to get you going. What graphics do you have? Normally I would agree, and it's probably fine, but I wanted to check that pesky rust/leaked weird spot to see if it had ...

Re: My first Octane

Hmm... picture? I would consider dremeling the top and then removing it with a flathead, but you may damage the plastic "handle" around the screw. I'm not sure it needs to be that drastic. Just some pliers and force is all that's really needed. I assume it is bound on the spring. I'll get...

Re: My first Octane

Got the Octane in today. Still looking for a monitor option - need to source adapter, will power on with serial interface soon. No disk drives, but TWO drive sleds!. BUT I have a 4 disk SCSI Sun external drive enclosure just sitting full of barracuda drives which I might steal one. The top screw to ...

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

I don't know why anyone is worried about it. The sub he is posting to has one moderator that has been suspended, meaning no one is running that sub. Also beyond the recent posts, no one had posted anything in 6 months, and previous to that it was not a very active channel. It seems to be geared towa...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

If a modern browser is the only thing holding you back, why not throw one on one of those Odroid boards, remote X SSH session into the thing and have that serve the browser to your IRIX machine. Then you could just use that to do the web heavy lifting.

Re: Are we a dying breed?

I don't know if a PC graphics subforum is a good idea. Usually this seems to attract people to fight their AMD vs. nVidia flame war. I have an AMD cpu and an Nvidia graphics card. Works fine, its 10 years old, plays all the latest games I care to play. I recently thought of upgrading to somet...

My first Octane

I got the one from ebay, $200 sight unseen. My only worry is that the previous owner "confirmed there were 2 cpu's", and I'm unsure how they did this without removing the heatsink and probably damaging the carrier. Anyhow, the only information that I know of so far is that it is CMNB015ANF...
