Re: My first Octane

I wouldn't pull the graphics board unless you need to. Get it tested first. I can send you a bootable drive and graphics cable cheap to get you going. What graphics do you have? Normally I would agree, and it's probably fine, but I wanted to check that pesky rust/leaked weird spot to see if it had ...

Re: My first Octane

Hmm... picture? I would consider dremeling the top and then removing it with a flathead, but you may damage the plastic "handle" around the screw. I'm not sure it needs to be that drastic. Just some pliers and force is all that's really needed. I assume it is bound on the spring. I'll get...

Re: My first Octane

Got the Octane in today. Still looking for a monitor option - need to source adapter, will power on with serial interface soon. No disk drives, but TWO drive sleds!. BUT I have a 4 disk SCSI Sun external drive enclosure just sitting full of barracuda drives which I might steal one. The top screw to ...

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

I don't know why anyone is worried about it. The sub he is posting to has one moderator that has been suspended, meaning no one is running that sub. Also beyond the recent posts, no one had posted anything in 6 months, and previous to that it was not a very active channel. It seems to be geared towa...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

If a modern browser is the only thing holding you back, why not throw one on one of those Odroid boards, remote X SSH session into the thing and have that serve the browser to your IRIX machine. Then you could just use that to do the web heavy lifting.

Re: Are we a dying breed?

I don't know if a PC graphics subforum is a good idea. Usually this seems to attract people to fight their AMD vs. nVidia flame war. I have an AMD cpu and an Nvidia graphics card. Works fine, its 10 years old, plays all the latest games I care to play. I recently thought of upgrading to somet...

My first Octane

I got the one from ebay, $200 sight unseen. My only worry is that the previous owner "confirmed there were 2 cpu's", and I'm unsure how they did this without removing the heatsink and probably damaging the carrier. Anyhow, the only information that I know of so far is that it is CMNB015ANF...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

I've always wondered why IBM dropped the feature on the G5. The more I work on the metal of the G5, the more it's clear it was a hurry-up job on IBM's part to pacify Apple. Do you feel its a poor implementation then? I've always wanted one of the quad G5's, but I wonder if getting one of the IBM sy...

You want an Aluminum CM-2? I mean I know people, but... seems like a lot of welding.

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

I am a reddit mod, Dodoid is correct. Unless it breaks the rules of the sub, which the mods/users create, it usually is left alone. An ADMIN, for reddit is something completely different, and I've never seen one in the wild.

Generally if something says [deleted], then it was done by the user.

Re: CM-5 Connection machine case for SBC

I'm sure it could be printed "face down". I don't actually know, but it sound right.

The hole in the front is for an oled panel. Unfortunately OLED seems the only way to go, however I really need to figure out a way to make it red.

CM-5 Connection machine case for SBC

Right, so because Dodoid makes these awesome 3d printed cases for an Odroid machine, I mentioned I might like to make the same for everyone's favorite supercomputer, the CM-5. Its actually rather easy, being a big square box. Put four or five of those together, and you have the machine. After a bit ...
