Re: Would you like some Java with that JavaStation?

Personally not a big believer in Java as a technology but those are two very cool units! :) Luckily (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), it's difficult to actually run Java on these things because the original OS (JavaOS) is difficult/impossible to find. I think JavaOS was basically m...

Re: Would you like some Java with that JavaStation?

Funny that you post this, I just picked up a Javastation-1 (aka Mr. Coffee) and have been trying to get it working... It's a little different hardware-wise than your Krups but maybe some of my experience will be useful. Mine has the newer 3.x OpenBoot/OFW so it should boot in a similar way to your K...

Re: Created docker for running an IRIX install server on your PC/laptop

Absolutely! Looking at the Vagrant file i see a very similar setup of services and mksh as kornshell like my docker: Using Debian images guarantees a small and supported foundation for our solutions. I was thinking of adding an efs filesystem driver to augment the docker with an option of supplying...

Re: Created docker for running an IRIX install server on your PC/laptop

Sounds sorta similar to the Vagrant setup I came up with a couple months ago to boot SGIs... but obviously I'm using Vagrant/Virtualbox instead of Docker. This is designed to Layer2-bridge onto your network so you can use RARP to boot installers on SGIs without having to type in IP addresses. https:...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

I don't always succeed due to travel, work, etc. but I try to boot up at least one of my UNIX machines every week. Definitely not getting any real work done on any of them, it's purely for leisure purposes - getting old stuff to compile, pretending to learn StudioTools while I'm just flying around w...

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

Interesting... your 4.1.1 tape 1/2 says Sun-4, but tape 2/2 says Sun-4c. Did you get one of each, or do you have the corresponding other tapes? Or is there something I'm missing?

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

So you have the 4.1.1 sun4c tape files? Or you have a system backup in tar/cpio/etc. files on a disk? I've seen tape files for 4.1.1 before but they were only for sun4, not sun4c. Would be hard to load them without a working system with a QIC drive, yeah. I think Sun did release a 4.1.1 CDROM that s...

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

Got 4.0.3c running on the IPC finally! It was a matter of having a working install of 4.1.4 on a separate disk, then writing the miniroot to the swap partition of the "target" disk, then mounting it and patching the kernel in the miniroot. Patching was successful this time, and I was able ...

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

Awesome, thanks guys. That 100204-01 basically says you can't use the original media to install because the media doesn't have the patch, but seems to indicate there was a patched Tape 1 available - probably lost to time though. I'll have to dig into this further to try another run at patching the m...

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

Found this reference to the "patch" for 4.0.3c: http://www.sunmanagers.org/1991/0313.html It turns out that if you have Sparcstation IPCs (or SLCs - 4/20?) with CPU board numbers 501-1680-03 and greater 0MB Sun-4/20 CPU Board 501-1748-03 and greater 0MB Sun-4/20 CPU Board 501-1689-08 and g...

Re: Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

Thanks! I do have 4.1.2 running on it now but I was hoping to go older simply for the sake of going older. Sounds like it's not worth the hassle on this machine, though. I'll probably just put 4.1.4 on it and call it good. I believe at release it shipped with 4.1.0. I put some info/pictures of the m...

Installing SunOS 4.0.3c on SPARCstation IPC

I recently revived a dead SPARCstation IPC (bad output caps in PSU) and wanted to get the oldest possible OS running on it, which as far as I can see *should* be SunOS 4.0.3c. I have the 23-floppy install distribution (readily available online) but it seems to give me all sorts of problems. I can bo...

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

Nice pictures! It was someone other than smj who was kind enough to offer to ship the machine to me, though. Was it you who was selling the HP Integral as well? or was that smj's too? Wish I'd known so many nekochan folks would be there, I didn't even think to check here until after I got back. It w...

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

I really wanted that Solbourne, hope it went to a good home! Would have been a little awkward carrying it through TSA though.

Ended up taking one of the PA-RISC boxes in the "$5 donation" pile after someone was nice enough to offer to ship it to me. Not sure if he's on nekochan or not.
