Re: your latest purchase

I got a nice little Pioneer dual cassette player from the thrift store...it's a CT-W770. Sadly not one of the neat -DR models like the CT-W616DR but still not a bad dual cassette machine for 8 dollars.

Re: your latest purchase

Ah, they were smart and didn't use the leaky SMD cans! It's those that cause all the problems.

Re: your latest purchase

The main problem with those ESDI drives is that they have capacitors on the drive controller board that go bad. The same thing is the culprit behind PS/2 floppy drive failures.

Re: your latest purchase

Yeah, that's why I'm just going to get a SCSI controller for it...it's a lot easier to use something like a SCSI2SD with a controller card than trying to find a working ESDI drive.

Re: your latest purchase

I've got two main obstacles with mine...one much bigger than the other.

For starters, I've got no hard disk. That's kind of a major issue.

Less importantly, the VGA connector on the PS/2 has a pin blanked off and I don't have any VGA monitors with that pin missing from their connector...

How ya gonna do it? Well, you're gonna PS/2 it! The solution is IBM!

Re: Things that make your blood boil

I can't stand pre-ATX PCs most of the time. Removing components can be incredibly awful if the engineers didn't feel like being kind that day.

I absolutely love floppy drives so those are always a plus. Having SCSI is a plus too.

I got myself an original Tandy 1000 and a Tandy CM-11 RGB monitor today. Now if only I had that damned keyboard that nobody makes an adapter for.

I'm apparently on a dead disk formats tear, as I bought both a Laserdisc player AND a MiniDisc Walkman... Ah, Laserdisc. Now you just need the unadulterated Star Wars trilogy... Fortunately the standard Laserdisc releases of the Star Wars trilogy are still affordable, so I definitely plan to get th...

Re: Computer with a real serial port

Another alternative is a cheap and boring Dell Optiplex 980 (2010-ish). Those were built even with a core i7 and have a parallel port, a serial port and ps/2 ports besides 4 usb-ports. They do not occupy a lot of space and are pretty silent machines as well. If portable (laptop) isn't a requirement...
