Re: SCSI fuse advice (or, how to kill a ThinkPad 800 with a SCSI2SD)

I disassembled down to the logic board and could not find any bad fuses. So apparently SCSI devices do use fuses, it makes sense though in retrospect. I just never encountered any problems with SCSI fuses before. How did you test the fuses? http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=179923 ...

Connecting to AIX remotely from Xming

So I know it's possible to connect into AIX with Xming: http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/#head-12 Has anyone here done it from scratch? I'm possibly interested in doing it at some point so I don't need to be sitting at my IntelliStation with a dedicated keyboard and monitor, and can just co...

Re: OS/400 Media (deliberately unintuitive?)

Well, you're supposed to have the required IBM training OR pay for an IBM service agreement if you are using OS/400. You're not supposed to mess around with it if you don't know what you are doing :D I don't know if training is still done for OS/400, there are some differences with that and the new...

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

This sounds hard to fit in honestly. I wonder whether it would work on the PCIe G5. It would be incredibly useful. Assuming the chassis has enough width it would be fine; if the G5 can process the card in question, it should be fine over PCI-e. I don't know much about the Asmedia 1083 conversion IC.

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

Nowadays I use whichever combo of OS-Application works best for the task in hand. This means I touch three or four OSs daily and store all my data in a FreeNAS box. But if it is really fast enough, based on your experience, I may get a Talos, retire the G5 and two servers, and hang everything on it...

Re: Too many beers? IBM PS/2 Model 70 MCA

Do you need a 5.25" FH 80 MB ESDI HDD? I have a spare that I'll never use. So what was wrong with the 95XP? There are Pentium 60 complexes floating around at sane prices last I checked (w/ FDIV, too!) Sometimes when MCA cards are bad, they refuse to take the ADFs because they're not properly de...

Sounds like dying backlights. What a shame, the T210 is pretty nice.

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

I'm assuming that the Talos will come with at least one legacy PCI slot. Does any of you know of any GXT135p-compatible-or-equivalent card with PCI-Express interface? Nah, you don't need native PCI, as you can convert PCI to PCI-e: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-PCI-Express-X1-to-PCI-Adapter-Card-Ris...

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

I was going to get one of the boards, but... because they're limited to POWER Linux with x.org, I'm going to have to pass. Until recently when I got to use Linux, I didn't realize what a steaming pile x.org is. In fact, Linux only works well (at least for me) at the console. Anything outside of that...

OS/400 Media (deliberately unintuitive?)

The OS/400 media I have has a few funny secrets about itself. First and foremost, all of the discs say "1 of 1", which is unlike IBM's other recovery media for their personal systems line... and their CD-ROM drivers like for Token Ring NICs... The reason why putting "1 of 1" on a...

Would you be able to take a photo of the area in question?
Maybe it's a diode or something.

Re: Anyone need a Z10 EC?

Wow, that was fascinating. Mainframes are incredible. I love the hardware-redundancy of everything, and how they are build to last and to just work. But boy, IBM can shoot itself on the foot at times. Security through obscurity can backfire badly. IBM shoots themselves in the foot, daily. And it ir...

Re: YUM for AIX

I was casually fooling around the Interwebs when somehow I ended up in the Linux Toolbox for AIX page and I noticed that it was refreshed (for the first time in years probably). And... guess what? There's now YUM for AIX. I'm sure that will eliminate 90% of my frustration operating AIX and could he...

Re: your latest purchase

JP-8000's a cool little keyboard - kind of the first wave of "virtual analog," but unlike a lot of Roland's very blah later VA offerings it actually has its own distinctive character to it. Anyway, my SEM got here today and it is glorious :D Oh, I have a JP-8080. It does have a few unique...
