Re: Anyone need a Z10 EC?

Wow, that was fascinating. Mainframes are incredible. I love the hardware-redundancy of everything, and how they are build to last and to just work. But boy, IBM can shoot itself on the foot at times. Security through obscurity can backfire badly. IBM shoots themselves in the foot, daily. And it ir...

Re: Anyone running Linux on JS20?

You probably don't want to run old Linux due to the security issues it has:

Re: YUM for AIX

I was casually fooling around the Interwebs when somehow I ended up in the Linux Toolbox for AIX page and I noticed that it was refreshed (for the first time in years probably). And... guess what? There's now YUM for AIX. I'm sure that will eliminate 90% of my frustration operating AIX and could he...

Re: your latest purchase

JP-8000's a cool little keyboard - kind of the first wave of "virtual analog," but unlike a lot of Roland's very blah later VA offerings it actually has its own distinctive character to it. Anyway, my SEM got here today and it is glorious :D Oh, I have a JP-8080. It does have a few unique...

Re: IBM AS/400 OS/400 questions

Is it the same licensing scheme (LUM) they use for e.g. the xLC compiler on AIX? That has it's roots in NetLS, and I happen to have reverse engineered and keygen-ed that :) Not sure... this is what the license instructions the vendor sent me say: iSeries Software License Key To install the license ...

Re: IBM AS/400 OS/400 questions

Quite irritating come right down to it. Ive seen thermostats with better interfaces than the three buttons on the front of this machine. Those System i/p operator panels are pretty standard across the board; perhaps they're not as irritating once you're familiar with the "IBM cake". The o...

Re: Games on AIX

I'm still in. I just remembered... getting Ethernet (or even Token Ring) working on a ThinkPad 850 requires a *specific* PCMCIA card which I don't have. Doubt a parallel to ethernet adapter would work either. Hmmmmm. Well guess it's time to see if I can find any of those uncommon PCMCIA adapters. M...

I'm always delighted when I see someone learning Portuguese. People only seem to be interested in learning Spanish... Feel free to ask if you need help. I know both Brazilian and European Portuguese well (in terms of spelling differences, grammar usage and unique expressions), although my accent is...

Re: Turning your back on windows

Don't know what display ports have to do with operating system... are the (non win/mac) systems only supporting DP and HDMI nowadays? Ditto for serial port. Because VGA has been in use since 1986 in businesses and continue to be highly common to this day. Which means it's hard to kill off stuff onc...

Re: Turning your back on windows

of course windows 10 is a joke for professional use. and i'm not even talking about things that involve sensitive data. Professional or not, the world either runs on Windows or mac OS with a majority on Windows--choose your poison; and that's not about to change any time soon since people still use...

Re: Turning your back on windows

Cuz Windows 10 sux. Really? Because after using the mac since around 10.4 I got a windows machine last year and really like it. Different strokes, I guess... Well just because one doesn't like mac OS doesn't mean that makes Windows 10 any better. I use Windows for all of my main production software...

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

it's just neat to see a machine come with one stock since the MWave on the Ultimedias were crap. Am I the only person alive who likes the MWave card ? advantages? disadvantages? MWave doesn't have FM Synthesis which is the main reason why people dislike them so. With that said, the ChipChat uses ES...

Re: your latest purchase

There's a surprising number of Nekochanners who are into synthesizers, actually. I have no idea why this should be the case, but there you are. Hmmmm.... would it be possible to create a 'how did you get into synthesizers' thread? Anyway, the FB-01 is a fun little box :) Nowhere near as flexible as...

Re: your latest purchase

Well I did get a DX7 recently as planned at a pawn shop for $270. The case is dented and the LCD needs to be replaced but otherwise it works great. Woah Raion-Fox, so I'm curious; do most of you guys buy synthesizers and have this degree of familiarity with them? That's like taking all of the niche...
