Re: Alphaserver DS15

Where should I point it to download the packages to install? Everything I can find is either offline or just a link to the netboot image. There's a preseed.cfg available which lists possible URLs. Nowadays the URL is: ftp.ports.debian.org ...and the directory is: debian-ports ...the latter maybe wi...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

Update on my DS10L: I bought a 4 port PCI bridge card from a standard DS10 workstation. :!: DO NOT DO THIS. :!: A capacitor almost immediately turned red hot and exploded with no PCI cards installed, so apparently there is some difference between the DS10L motherboard and the DS10/XP900 motherboard...

I find this remote X windows on SGI machines intriguing. Would you mind describing your used setup a little bit, e.g. which tools you used on IRIX and on Linux, which OS version on the Mini Indigo and so on?

Can you prove me it?

No and I think there's also no need for prove. Finding things - whatever they are - interesting is simply a very personal subjective thing. :)

Why?

Maybe because these architectures are far more interesting than the hundredth infusion of x86. We should keep these things around for our children and their children to play with, don't you think? :)

Re: HP9000 C8000 noise

My 285 idles at around 250W-300W, depending on its mood. I've not yet measured my G5. Everything I own that stays up 24/7 are now clocking 135W. I once measured the power usage on startup and idle for my c8000 with 2 x PA-8800 @ 1GHz (2 CPUs, 4 cores), 4 GiB of memory (8 x 512 MiB modules) 1 DVD-RO...

Re: IRIX Source code

So at some point, I'll have to spend a dull weekend splitting the patch up into discrete pieces, which is sometimes more of a chore w/ git than one might think (though, I am probably using git wrong). git commit -p and git rebase -i are your friends. And your foes, too. git-gui might be also helpfu...

[ebay][de] R4600PC Indy for cheap (not mine)

There's an Indy with R4600PC and extra stuff (keyboard, mouse, cam, CRT display, external CD-ROM and HDD, documentation, etc.) available for small money (only 60 EUR for the whole stuff!) on Ebay Germany currently: https://www.ebay.de/itm/232534450430 But you'll have to fetch it from Hannover. Good ...

I think a fully upgraded Starfire - assuming they're extremely rare today - would be exactly what I wish to find these days! :D (plus a supply of free energy...)

Re: your latest purchase

It's also a Sonnet. The urban legend is that Motorola sent them some 1GHz parts when they were out of the 800MHz ones, so Sonnet made a small run of the faster card. The various estimates of how many were made are all less than 200, and some dude on ePay had three of them in the original box! Must ...

Re: your latest purchase

Got one of the hard to find 1GHz G4 upgrades for the beige PCI Power Macs. Though the bus holds these systems back, the L3 cache doubles to 2MB, so that should help quite a bit. My 7300 has the 800MHz/1MB version of this card and this ought to be a very welcome upgrade, since it is primarily a clas...

[ebay][uk] R4K Indigo2 (teal) - looks like new (not mine)

There's currently an R4K Indigo² in teal skins available on Ebay UK from Newport Pagnell, starting a 100 GBP:

Judging from the first four pictures I'd say it looks like new, but see for yourself.

That could also work well and would make it easier to overlap the beam angle of the LEDs.

Re: Octane: 2xR12k 300MHz, 2048MB, MXE

It is possible to see two distinct light sources when viewed exactly from the front, but within 15 degrees or so they combine into a single solid white bar. Thanks for the frontal picture, I think it still looks great. Maybe when you bend the LEDs a little closer to each other, but then the rest of...

Re: Octane: 2xR12k 300MHz, 2048MB, MXE

The LEDs came out amazing. They look bright white in the photo, but they are a much softer white in real life. In person they look exactly the way I remember the originals. Looks great on the picture above. I made a similar modification to the light bars of my two Octanes end of 2016 but used only ...
