Re: Computer with a real serial port

Can't go wrong with the D630, I've had a few and theyre pretty solid. A dell C600 will also work if you want something older that will run win98/dos.

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

Picked up a VAXStation 4000 VLC from a recycler who knew they were valuable. I paid him $50 for it as we couldn't test it. It looks decent enough. Needs a new Dallas chip and probably some other work. Was it the guy in DC with the huge warehouse? He's on ebay under the seller name efi. I've got two...

Latest updates on potential performance hits (not pasting the whole thing because it's quite long): https://www.nextplatform.com/2018/01/08/cost-spectre-meltdown-server-taxes/ Particularly relevant for people here: Neither early UltraSparc chips from Sun Microsystems, nor Itaniums from Intel, are ef...

Re: Talos Secure Workstation

Unfortunately in-order CPUs can still speculate on execution; the difference is in how they issue instructions, which can be done speculatively or not, so the POWER6 is probably in the same risk category as the G5. Interestingly, the RPi cores don't speculate per Eben, so they're immune completely....

The reg also has a good overview of how intel is trying to PR-wipe this away

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

So wait, every Intel x86_64 CPU for the last 10 years has this flaw, even the newest ones? I was just about to buy an i5-8600K, is Intel going to offer fixed CPUs that fit the same socket? They don't appear to be too forthcoming with whatever they've got in mind from here on out... Yes, and  i...

Re: Talos Secure Workstation

Given the recent fundamental design flaw in the intel x64 line, I'm hoping Talos gets some extra interest. Still likely to be far outside of my price range for the foreseeable sadly, but I'm eagerly awaiting updates.

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

They're frequently on ebay for that much or less as well, I think it was the standard Compaq PC audio card of the era. I have one that was 99 cents plus shipping, sadly only one PCI slot available on a DS10L and that's for the Radeon. :)

Re: FS: It's trackball time! (Logitech Marble FX x2, Ergo MX x1)

So was the ErgoMX issue to do with the rechargeable battery? I've had an M570 for several years and hadn't had any issues, but it runs on AAA batteries.

So I should use the EV56 optimized version on my EV67?

Re: Alphaserver DS15

The initial setup doesn't seem to like letting you install more than the base system and utilities but that's enough to run updates and it's now pulling down MATE and synaptic, it's fairly up-to-date in terms of automating the setup other than the initial install. Certainly more friendly than Gentoo...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

Well, there was a little bit of confusion reinterpreting the instructions for PA Risc to AXP but I've got a basic console installed and it's currently updating, I'll probably fire it off to install more than the basics tonight.
