Re: Hardware is Cheap, Programmers are Expensive

Check out MenuetOS as an example of this. Written by one guy as a hobby project, contains stuff like games, a web browser, transparency support for window themes, and drivers for common hardware. Supports up to 64gb of ram, lots of cores, x64, audio, etc. The entire OS, including all of this, is 1.4...

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

I live in Ottawa! Freezing rain is certainly common. Onyxes are hard to find around here though. There's B&B in Montreal, but right now all the have is a Challenge L and it's fairly priced but not as good as I would like. Maybe someday someone on Nekochan around here will want to get rid of a bi...

Re: SGI O2 Skins

An O2+ is just an O2 with a different case and later specs (which were also available in the O2). It even appears as an O2 in hinv.

Re: Turning your back on windows

I don't use Ubuntu either, I just remember when it was like that. I usually go with Debian, except my main laptop which is Qubes.

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

Yep. They didn't originally know how powerful the N64 would be (obviously less powerful than an Onyx though) so the developers had to guess. When they finally got the dev hardware (inside Indys, but not using the Indy's hardware) it turned out to be slower than they thought, and they had to quickly ...

Re: Turning your back on windows

Of course virtualization can have security holes. Holes have been found (and patched) in Xen multiple times. As the Qubes homepage says, it's "a reasonably secure operating system", not a perfect one. Still, compartmentalization is certainly an improvement, if not a panacea, especially con...

Re: Turning your back on windows

Certainly sounds problematic, but do you believe it is enough of an issue that Qubes use of systemd makes it less secure (even with virtualization and all the security stuff) than something like Devuan? Of course, no code is perfect, but I would think Qubes still has the advantage, even with systemd?

Re: Turning your back on windows

So if I understand correctly the issue with systemd's security is that if the supervisor were compromised, the entire system would be. Can you elaborate on what race conditions the supervisor could run into which may create a vulnerability?

Re: Turning your back on windows

Even if all of them were trying to censor content, the chances that there wouldn't be at least one censorship algorithm which missed any given page would be very slim, causing it to show up on ixquick. No, that isn't how ixquick works unfortunately. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixquick#Search_mech...

Re: Turning your back on windows

image  Yes, I know it retrieves searches from numerous search engines. It's not perfect, but at least as a metasearch any censorship of anti-systemd content would have to exist on a LOT of search engines, all in different countries with different policies regarding governments as opposed to ge...

Re: Dallas chips

Nothing wrong with it, from a technical perspective it works fine, but it's such a strange place to put a speaker. It also means that replacing the PSU needlessly replaces a bunch of other random (probably working) bits. I'm sure it's confused many who attempted to find their speaker.

Re: Dallas chips

who designed the mainboard? Placing the "power up" jumper just slightly unaccessible until you remove the CPU tray (R12K300)? Which, to make things worse, you have to do twice, once to set the jumper so the system boots, and once to remove it, so the system powers down normally. Amazing, ...

Ahh I see, you think that it's ironic to use a privacy focused search engine while the government is controlling my mind using systemd rays  .
