Re: How do you explain....

I'm 14. Most of my friends used a computer before that, but most kids get their first personal machine around the age of 10 or 11 or so when they start Grade 6 or 7 (I have had them for far longer than that, though I bought by first "actually modern" post Core2 one, still my main Xeon rig,...

Re: How do you explain....

For most people my age, their first computer ran Windows 7 or 10. If they're into computers like most of my friends, they probably built it from random Kijiji parts or if they had a little more to spend whatever Canada Computers had on sale. They put all the parts together, never even had to open th...

2017-04-23 18.45.20.jpg 2017-04-23 18.46.12.jpg Didn't have a DB9 F-F adapter, made my own. Yes, the CTS wires are held together with a hemostat, and yes, I did have to individually go through all the wires on that old chopped up DB-25 cable to find which colors go to the laptop. The laptop is runn...

Re: Some concept screenshots I made a while ago

As I wrote earlier, Kronos 2 uses openbox so that you can run regular Linux apps as well as Kronos apps. Kronos 1 was just one big kronos.py with windows rendered on the page and apps in iframes with no window manager, but that meant that if you started a regular program it had no window decorations...

That's probably the issue then. I won't be able to try it until Sunday, but I bet that's it.

It's very possible something is messed up with my serial setup. Cable which might be null modem + DB9 jack with header pins + USB serial with individual wires to connect is likely to have a problem somewhere, I might try Telix on an older laptop.

I can't see anything on the L1 port or the #1 Serial port on the back, but maybe it doesn't output anything without graphics. The light on the front is red for a few seconds when turned on, then goes to blinking white. I'm obviously planning to get graphics, but should I be able to communicate with ...

Re: sgi crimsons. 2 of them

They were only the latest and greatest for a year! Came out in 1992 as their first R4000 product, replaced by the Onyx in 1993. Probably why they are seemingly less common that some other SGIs.

Re: Altrix 4700 Teardown Video

I don't think it's been posted, but I suspect a lot of us have seen it. It's quite sad seeing the Altix torn apart. You may truly say that it's not really vintage tech yet, and it's true it's hardly modern. It may even have awesome scrap metal value. Still, that's what people who chucked out Onyxes ...

Moderators, please tell me if we should move to another forum. Today's work: 2017-04-16 19.16.41.jpg Box in corner to pop up an Xterm and run a command in it. This took longer than expected due to some PHP related complicataions. 2017-04-16 19.17.13.jpg Badge can now be toggled using an entry in the...

Re: Web browsing from IRIX using headless chrome?

WRP does this using Webkit, which is neat. I wasn't able to make it work, but YMMV.
