Re: Will MDD/FW-800 CPU work in G4 MDD?

It is now possible to run OS 9 with FW800 Macs. Even the FW800 port works, albeit at 400 speeds.
Someone modified the Mac OS ROM file, bypassing the machine-type check that blocks boot on FW800 Macs.

If you can't find it, I can look it up in my archives.

Re: your latest purchase

One of them I'm planning to upgrade to Xeon E3-1265L V2. They are quad core and the TDP is 10W above the rating of the heatsink, but I think they will just throttle down if needed. Mine originally came with a Celeron but the original owner upgraded to an E3-1260L which is the Sandy Bridge equivalen...

Re: your latest purchase

I considered an upgrade like this with a thinkpad w520 but the scientific testing by internet neckbeards confirmed that it was better to get the fastest supported cpu (2920xm) as opposed to a 55w tdp (2960xm). I guess the original config maxed out at 2920 for a reason. The heatsink in the Gen8 Micr...

Very interesting to compare Raion-Fox's and Dodoid's approach.

I'm happy we saved a Fuel! =)

Re: Mac OS 9 in 4K res - pointless evening

I guess OS 9 wouldn't really care what the resolution is. I've been using a 1080p display with my MDD for the longest time. I think it depends a lot on the quality of the graphics card drivers. I don't see why the GeForce 4 MX wouldn't handle it compared to the Radeon 9000 Pro, if I compare the out...

Mac OS 9 in 4K res - pointless evening

Since I have nothing to do and 2 G4 MDDs on the floor, well... IMG_9065.JPG The boot screen icons are microscopic. IMG_9060.JPG Things are mostly unreadable... IMG_9062.JPG But the graphing calculator runs beautifully. Classila is unreadable, but works and renders things properly. The GeForce 4 MX s...

Automated ZFS replication instead of lugging external disk boxes around :) I chose this one (2nd hand, 6 months old) because the brand-new Gen 10 model only comes with s...

Re: IBM 9110-51A as a Linux Workstation

Hi Joe, I'm glad you found my video useful. It took me a good amount of weekends over 6 months to get the whole thing to work. Now my 285 has audio, 8GB of RAM and is a fully functional Linux workstation. (The day I have nothing else to do with my life I will max it out with 32GB). Swapping back and...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Now with the Intel Macs, Apple has painted themselves into a corner; there is no real alternative to x86_64. In the laptop low-power space all the other options are laughable, and on the workstation side Apple wouldn't like the PR debacle of "retreating to Power ISA." I'd also argue there...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

I have the first CD that was released, an album by Billy Joel. The dynamic range is fantastic. They really put in all they could to show all that CDs could deliver. My girlfriend's cousin is an accomplished violinist and has a few SACD albums released. That alone made me hunt the market for a fat PS...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

Another one that annoyed me no end was the move to 16:9 screens in combination with the advertising slogans of "HD" and "Full-HD". An HD screen sounds great, but in reality 1366x768 is a absolutely shit resolution. Similarly, the marketing blurb for the new range of workstations...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

I really love restoring things, it brings me both great enjoyment and satisfaction. I also get to learn allot at the same time. (More important than what you have, is what it teaches you.) Indeed. Playing with old computers makes me a better professional. I actually became the go-to person at work ...
