The tale of the missing jumper

Yesterday (well, today), 2am, red eyes, trying to wrap up something that I've been trying to finish for months. I push the power button, nothing happens. I start reviewing everything and find out that I need a jumper. Jumpers used to be plentiful. My dad had to hide jumpers so my younger sister woul...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I seriously will never forget the moment almost 30 years ago when I was wrestling with equations for my Physical Chemistry course, and I finally understood entropy at the mathematical level. Entropy has no mercy...probably the most sobering thing I learned in college. Could you share something on t...

Re: Humorous review of G5 life

That was on osnews as well. I think what Ashley forgets to mention, or ignores, is that at the time G5s were out, Intel was on NetBurst, so the G5s were not worse villains than Intel machines at that time. My job at the time had a Dual Netburst Xeon workstation sitting somewhere, and the thing was s...

Re: Obtaining licenses for old software

The toughest bit might be to find an old FLEXlm SDK, but breaking '90s FLEXlm already wasn't terribly hard back then already. Aha! Many years ago, back in my home country (where a license of Maya would cost 10x the minimum wage), I worked at a place that used cracked copies of it and I remember ins...

Re: Obtaining licenses for old software

Time to image that hard drive out somewhere. I always try to stay legal, as a matter of principle. I'm a musician and I just hated to have my work taken away for free. I try to cut middlemen and myself and my groups do only direct sales. I have less sympathy for giant software behemoths, but the pri...

Way to go!
I've subscribed to you, will watch when I can.

I'm a sucker for the old school way of doing things, surely will enjoy it and leave my comment over there.

Re: your latest purchase

A bunch of Raspberry Pi goodies. My brother drives an old car, so I'm taking this home and we will build a car computer for him, with GPS, 3G, anti-theft tracking and reading data from the car diagnostics port using a Bluetooth bundle. We will try to pass through door locks and windows using the GPI...

Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

the encode times might be related to some kind of GPU acceleration not being available when several displays are connected and the GPU then running out of resources? just a guess. I guess the same thing. The whole computer becomes in general very unusable when I'm exporting from iMovie with two scr...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I guess the most complex ICs can't be repaired, but they are not the ones that break easily anyway.

Capacitors, resistors, batteries, power supplies, etc., that's all resolvable. The only limitation is the skill of the engineer.

Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

I have a mid-2011 Mini with AMD Graphics, 2 SSDs and 16GB of RAM. However: 1. If I have two displays connected, whenever I'm encoding video, the export times go up by a factor of 20x. No idea why. Even a simple iMovie video outputting H264... It can be showing 15 minutes remaining, but as soon as I ...

Re: your latest purchase

Mine's purely a router, I do wireless with a dedicated AP (currently an old router, but I plan to move to a mesh solution). I tried Linux based routers with AP functionality without much success before. Always something: either it needs an unavailable blob for proper (= full speed) functionality, o...

Glad to hear! I've ordered for it already a Wi-Fi mini-PCIe card from China, two antennae, and a 32GB mSATA disk for the system and to store the eventual packet capture. My friend wants to have a all-in-one thing.

Re: your latest purchase

Few goodies scored during the last two weeks: - Mint looking dual 867 MDD G4. I need to work on making it silent. It's going to be a gift for my friend, to edit audio. He has got a child, so won't have much time to come to our studio anymore. - Time to be honest, so I bought the Final Cut Studio. - ...
