Re: your latest purchase

Mine's purely a router, I do wireless with a dedicated AP (currently an old router, but I plan to move to a mesh solution). I tried Linux based routers with AP functionality without much success before. Always something: either it needs an unavailable blob for proper (= full speed) functionality, o...

Glad to hear! I've ordered for it already a Wi-Fi mini-PCIe card from China, two antennae, and a 32GB mSATA disk for the system and to store the eventual packet capture. My friend wants to have a all-in-one thing.

Re: your latest purchase

Few goodies scored during the last two weeks: - Mint looking dual 867 MDD G4. I need to work on making it silent. It's going to be a gift for my friend, to edit audio. He has got a child, so won't have much time to come to our studio anymore. - Time to be honest, so I bought the Final Cut Studio. - ...

Many machines of the era, not only SGIs, have problems with higher-density modules. Some don't. That's why you see sometimes "official ceiling 512MB, unofficial tested 1024MB" in machines from the era. That means the machine had no trouble with higher-density chips. The double-sided ones, ...

Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

What were the RT issues with ProRes? In theory, I should be able to run ProRes on RT at 1080p, but it won't let me. It just keeps telling me transitions and effects have to be pre-rendered. As far as I know, the G5 should be able to handle it. I'm going through the manual now (the beautiful smell o...

Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

Gentlemen, Waking my own thread from the grave, for the record, I found my final setup: - Uncompressed works fine for 1080p@24fps (that's what I use). RTExtreme (preview of transitions and multiple layers without pre-render) works fine. My NAS is fast enough to push 1 stream to the Quad without any ...

Re: HP9000 C8000 noise

To be candid: you have to really like HP/UX, otherwise you won't do a lot with it (yet another linux box?) and it'll be a doorstop. I don't have any experience with HP/UX, but would love to try. Honestly, I had no previous experience with AIX either, and what I've learned playing with it made me a ...

Re: HP9000 C8000 noise

Thanks! I own a Quad G5 and an IBM 285, and if they are quieter than these, then it's ok. I find the 285 louder, but less annoying, than the G5. It's a more constant sound, without annoying interference and overlaps. My 285 idles at around 250W-300W, depending on its mood. I've not yet measured my G...

HP9000 C8000 noise

Hi everyone,

I wonder how loud these are, I'm thinking of getting one.
Anyone has an idea?

Thanks!

Re: Alphaserver DS15

After failing to get Xorg working, I started looking at the alpha linux mailing lists. Compiled the radeon and amdgpu drivers into the kernel (not as modules) and got X working with a PCI Radeon 7000 64MB. Question: How is the window resize performance with the PCI Radeon 7000? I have the same card...

Can you save it out somewhere straight to a NFS mount or something?
I use often recordmydesktop, has anyone tried to compile it? You can defer rendering for after capture, a very useful feature.

Again, Dodoid, you have very loving parents...
I'd be greeted by the belt of justice in a second if I'd leave such mess behind.

I'll get a photo of my setup done in a few days and share. No SGI yet, though. =\

Re: your latest purchase

Found this boxed Sound Blaster Live at a Goodwill last weekend. Not particularly exciting hardware but it's unusual to find the original retail packaging (which is 90% empty). OMG, the memories. I had a OEM one with a Dell Pentium III, and remember having a blast with the demos. Some of the MIDI so...
