Re: How can we encourage better group participation on this site?

These I just had off the top of my head. There are many other sites where you can get good information without having to watch a video. At one point I did an ifixit teardown (oh dear god, remember that site? I think I lost a bet to do that one...) for my Onyx back when I still owned it. https://www...

Re: How can we encourage better group participation on this site?

I personally think that very well produced vids properly and professionally showing of the intricacies of SGI machines (hardware) and the use of IRIX on Youtube, making reference to Nekochan as a wealth of information, would be far more useful than the use of social media such as Facebook And Twitte...

Re: R12K O2

The problem is that these memory modules gave me errors even when they were in the slots closest to the CPU.

Do any of you make use of this type of memory kit in your O2 without it giving you errors?

Re: How can we encourage better group participation on this site?

Acquiring physical machines and maintaining them. I feel you, especially the maintaining part. That is where I had to give up the life, I wasn't going to be able to keep fixing the system indefinitely. Rather than not having any SGI gear at all, why don't you guys just go with one machine (the Indi...

Re: R12K O2

I happen to have two such memory kit's and even when I only had them slotted into the first and second memory banks in the machine, it gave me sporadic memory issues. I don't think that the memory slots in the machine themselves are defective, as they work perfectly fine with the SGI branded double ...

Re: R12K O2

The 128mb kit shown here consists of two 64mb modules, but what can be misleading about them is the fact that each of them has 128 on it, but of you take a close look, you will notice the 01/128 KIT of 2 and 02/128 KIT of 2 memory-sgi-o2-128mb-ram-kit-kingston-128mb-kid-m15-ksg-02-128-sgi-o2-8ac1c77...

Re: How can we encourage better group participation on this site?

It's sad but for anyone looking to get into the hobby these days it's either getting some low-end gear and loving it for nostalgia's sake or sinking a lot of money into systems that will, eventually, become harder and harder to maintain. The process that you have to go through to acquire these mach...

Re: HP9000 C8000 noise

Simply due to economy, modern computers have become far more generic than the computes of old were. Modern machines function beautifully, don't get me wrong, but due to their generic nature, they don't seem as interesting to computer hardware enthusiasts as older machines do. Nowadays, the two main ...

Re: A snapshot of what you've got.

I have added some "signature" pics of various SGI's and macs, as well as some other machines, at the beginning of this thread. feel free to use them in your signature if you want. (Thats what they're there for) :D I will be very happy to add pics of other machines on request, so that they ...

Re: Picked up O2+ on eBay.

You won't be able to fit the R12K CPU module to an R5K motherboard. (they are quite different) As far as I know, you won't be able to fit an R10K motherboard into an R5K O2 without some required modification to the inner case. If the divider for the hard drive bay that needs to be removed comes out ...

Re: Picked up O2+ on eBay.

This chart off Ian's website gives you some kind of idea of the performance difference between these CPU's: Screen Shot 2017-11-12 at 16.30.53.png Note that this doesn't indicate the performance difference in all scenario's. The R12K is significantly more powerful, given that they both run at the sa...
