Re: Indigo 2 Hardware Dilemma!!! :(

I know the feeling and it's horrible! :( It absolutely amazes me how badly people in general tend to pack items. (Not a thought goes into it at all!) You just need to handle one of these machines to realise that the plastics are extremely brittle and that it will need to be extremely well packaged w...

Re: Would you like some Java with that JavaStation?

Looks like a standard mini-DIN-8, same as an old Macintois serial cable. In order to find the pins here is what I would suggest. Open the unit up down to the board. Find a ground and use a continuity tester to find the ground pins. Map those out. Then find the traces going to voltage regulators, an...

Re: Would you like some Java with that JavaStation?

I now have two JavaStation-10's (one is a brand new unit) the only problem is that I don't have a power supply brick. (This I will definitely need to source.) It seems that people who hung onto these units usually kept them for display purposes and didn't keep the Power Supplies as a result! :( The ...

Re: Computer with a real serial port

Those Dell's are really cool!

I currently use an old HP Nx6120 with a Centrino CPU as my terminal laptop and it works fine for me. (Nice and neat)

I would love to have an old IBM Think-Pad, but that rubberised coating.......???

Re: your latest purchase

I bought a Macintosh IIfx. Wicked fast! Very cool! Please document your adventures with it somewhere. =) I will once I get it. Trying to upgrade the RAM is gonna be "fun" though, thanks to proprietary SIMMs... Very cool system indeed, I just watched some videos covering them on Youtube. I...

Re: What Apple hardware do we have?

Waiting to see how new Mac Pro pans out price/performance wise. Im sure the Mac Pro 2018 will be one hell of a machine! As you well know from using these products, performance (the numbers generated by benchmarks) are not the only thing of importance, there are some aspects that simply can't be mea...

Are the fuses in question designed to show physical signature to indicate that they've blown?

I've only recently become aware that surface mount fuses exist. (Ignorance is bliss I suppose)

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

Personally, I take a neutral approach - I've owned plenty of AMD and Intel systems over the years and I wouldn't call either of them "poor quality". Both companies have had their ups and downs over the years, but good competition is healthy for the industry. Agreed, it doesn't help to be ...

That IBM really kicked some ass! Here are some details on the IBM system. (planned availability from 27th of June 2005) http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS105-164 It just shows you how quickly systems be...

Re: What Apple hardware do we have?

I've had this system since early February 2014 and it's my daily driver. (My only system thats in daily use) Despite what people have to say about these machines, for me, it's been an extremely positive experience. My system is the entry-level configuration and even tough this is the case, it has se...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

An Onyx2, noisy? Must depend on config. I have a friend who has an Onyx2 and his isn't super loud. It's fan tray has 9 large fans in it and they're definitely not the silent type. (Each one of them is at least the size of the fans found inside an Octane.) I suppose it also depends on what you consi...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

You must just hear the racket an Onyx2 makes, it's just ridiculous! (The Octane2 is as quiet as a mouse in comparison.)

There's just no logical reason to fit a sound card to such a machine! :D

I can't even begin to imagine the kind of noise that an Origin2000 based supercomputer would have made!

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

noticeably faster (i went dual-600 V12 in the end) but can't name those as favourites due to their insane noise levels. had to get a noiseproofed rack to be able to survive the terror. a massive black obelisk next to the desk. nowadays though i get my unix fix from the mac. great for the ears! I en...
