Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Yes it is an awesome machine. Yet I was saddened the other day to discover it couldn't even play more than 480p videos, given the available mplayer. I thought about selling everything once again (yes, I'm short on money these days) but came back to my senses. 8-) Not that it will necessarily make a...

Re: your latest purchase

The type of styling is actually quite similar, come to think of it! :D The interesting thing here though is that the JavaStation-10 actually predated the 320/540 by about two years! (It may have, in a way, even served as the initial design inspiration for the Visual Workstation's exterior design, wh...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I drew the line at tall rack systems. And then I cheated and got a 4D/380 Predator rack  At some point when you have lots of systems, various infrastructure bits make sense and they usually come in 19" form factor (console server, network switches, FDDI concentrator, disk arrays, ...)...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I only run an Octane and an O2. I have almost every part in double (or triple sometimes). I even have a spare dual R14K/600Mhz module for the Octane just in case. Every once in a while when I'm short on money I'm thinking about selling it but then I think "what if the damn thingamabob fails ? ...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

For me, the Indigo2 has to be one of the more solid systems - but the higher end Max IMPACT cards are a lot more fragile than Solid IMPACT due to TRAM issues. Part of the issue with later systems as well is that SGI was doing a lot more poorly financially, so some corners were cut to try and reduce...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Which system with good performance do you think would probably be the easiest to keep going far into the future? Define "good performance" ;) Seriously though: if a 5 year old MacPro crushes an 8 CPU Onyx 350 by an order of magnitude , how do you think any SGI will compare to a contempora...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

The desksides have always been the holy grail of hardware i one day wished to own. I really would not want to trade this stuff for anything in the world, but i am getting concerned about the long term feasibility of keeping these things running. At some point, we're all probably just going to have ...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

The missing and blown component is on a daughter board, you can maybe request the seller to send you another daughter board at their expense. The tantalum cap is probably the same as the one next to it, but I don't know what the broken component is. It's probably easiest to request a new daughter bo...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

Take a look at the stickers on the boards, the numbers are different! (different boards) s-l1600.jpg P1030674_preview.jpg The board that they sold you was not the one that they had pictured in their listing! The damage to the board isn't shipping damage, thats a blown tantalum cap, they sold you a b...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

It seems a real shame if the global stock of O2s is reducing on account of broken skins. There was a rackmountable "naked" version, from which I infer the machine will work without plastics, so where is the supply of (cheaper ;-) ) skinless O2s for those who just want the functionality? S...

I will have to keep a look out for a MrCoffee myself, as this is also a very cool little machine.

Re: your latest purchase

I managed to get another JavaStation. (a brand new unit that still even has the securing tape on it, plus the owners manual!) You're lucky. Be very careful with the purple "wings", the plastic notches which allow you to close them again after having opened them to plug the various cables,...
