Re: IRIX in virtual machines

My own interest begins at Octane, and moves quickly to Origin. Unfortunately, last I checked, QEMU doesn't support any specific MIPS IV CPU, which basically leaves me at somewhat of a loss (CPU emulators are a pain to get right). Even simulating a headless Octane would be a win as far as I'm concern...

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

I'd anticipate that picking up a 3-button ADB mouse (they exist!) might help with that last, though I've not tried it. There is support for 3-button mice: the manual mentions the Logitech MouseMan. The only one I've seen is the (optical) Mouse Systems A/3, and finding them is not easy. It might be ...

Plankalkül should be a bit closer-to-home, surely?

Re: Fuel CPU Disabled

You might need two serial connections for this. The Fuel doesn't tend to use the L1 for its console connection, it speaks over one of the external serial ports. Which means that if you need both interaction channels, you need two serial connections.

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

Why? The Mac keyboard and mouse work fine and can (with a little effort) simulate all the Symbolics keys. Not entirely; the Local and Repeat keys are missing. (They have no function on a MacIvory.) But the position of some other keys is just awkward, and the dedicated keys for entering Lisp express...

A TI microExplorer. Even just as an upgrade kit rather than as a full machine.

Booting an O350 over NFS should be doable, IIRC... But isn't the ethernet port part of the IO9 kit?

Re: OpenVMS Hobbyist Kit

You know that you can get a CD image file for the asking as part of your hobbyist license, right? You get your license PAKs, and then fire back an email requesting a download for whichever system you need. They then send you a time-limited login to some ftp to download from.

Re: SGI Terminal Server config

I'm running one of these, with the EL-16 driver software ("dgrp") installed on my Linux box. The main thing that I worry about is the kernel module breaking, as it's an out-of-tree module for some reason. Overall setup wasn't particularly difficult, at least. The cables aren't too hard to ...

Re: free not-working Mac G5 DP 1.8

"Some chance at repair", huh? Is this something that can be done with some patience and a soldering iron, or would it require a hot-air rework station... or the supplies and equipment to re-ball BGAs?

Re: SGI Newbie with an Octane - No "Boot to Maintenance" ?

First thing that I might try is to pull the hard drives. If there's no drive to boot from, it has to stop to ask what to do. From there, you can get to the PROM console and disable auto-boot. Shut back down, put the drives back in, and go from there.

Re: G5 dead logic board?

If I recall correctly, some G5-era systems fail due to problems with the lead-free solder which was relatively new at the time, sometimes fixable by careful use of a hair dryer. And there may have been a run of bad capacitors on the market as well...

Re: Problem extracting motherboard (Octane2)

Best guess: One of the DIMMs escaped its slot, and is blocking removal of the mainboard. Put the motherboard in as far as it will go, lay the system on its side, motherboard side down, and try to remove the motherboard that way.

Re: Trying to Resurrect a Macintosh Color Classic

25 years? I'd suggest that any electrolytic capacitors in the system are likely to be marginal at this point, and would be a good first thing to swap out to see if it helps. The 3.6v battery being dead shouldn't prevent the system from starting up, it just keeps it from remembering things like which...

Re: PS/2 to USB converter

How about making your own using an arduino and a PS/2 port? Some quick research suggests that much of the software work would already be done, and the circuit amounts to just wiring the PS/2 port to pins on the arduino (which surprised me, actually, I had figured that there would be pull-up or pull-...
