If you do find it, make sure you hold onto it tightly, because you may never find it again.

What you really want for long term archival purposes is M-DISC. It's like carving your data into a stone disk.

Go for it. Just don't complain in 10 years when your only choice is Intel no matter how much you pay.

That's a depressing and bleak dystopian future. :(

Re: Gliding / Glider simulator

The only thing remotely close to a flight simulator is Certain Impact. It's more of an arcade game than anything, but it is cool anyways. IT's a WWI biplane game, where you have to blow up the train before it gets to it's destination, while avoiding and destroying the enemy planes sent to intercept ...

Just make sure the package isn't intercepted by the tailored operations unit. ;)

Re: Things that make your blood boil

Mostly only selling widescreen monitors and not standard definition ones. That really pisses me off. I don't care if joe six pack wants to watch DVD's, sell me a proper sized screen, thanks. Trying to get rid of physical media. What's gonna happen if the internet goes down and everyone is dependent ...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

Not real excited at the notion that I should have to replace my Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge machine because of this stupid issue. Though the Sandy Bridge machine is in its twilight years, I just don't feel like spending money to replace it, right now. Atleast the Alpha, MIPS and SPARC aren't affecte...

Re: Features that a vintage machine must have in order to spark your interest?

Has to have 24 bit graphics. A decent amount of working software and preferably a decent sound card. I prefer to be able to use them like a PC. I don't mind doing command line, as long as I'm not stuck with only that. That's why I pretty much only have SGI's. But do have an Alpha configured as a wor...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Not every SGI will survive for forever, but if it's honestly something we care about (and I have every indication that we do), we certainly have the skills, knowledge, and technology to keep a lot of units of a lot of models of SGIs running for a lot of years into the future. Nothing is forever. Es...

Nice getting into the DEC business. I guess you are gonna run VMS on there?

I can't say I would blame anyone if they went on a rescue mission for that. Landing Zone: Fukushima.

Compaq Creative Labs AudioPCI Card. Has to have the Ensoniq 1373 chip.

I bought mine from Island Computers so that I didn't have to worry about getting the wrong one. They are selling for $10.00 currently. A real bargain. :)

As an owner of an Indigo2 IMPACT. I would be interested if you were to start selling a working adapter. :)

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

So the summary of this topic would be: SGI still can and should be used in CGI professional since Octane 2 onwards and has no way to deny? It's not an old one, it's an option. Probably not a great idea. With SGI IRIX now being dead for over 11 years and the support of SGI hardware being dropped alm...

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

Can't remember if I mentioned it here before or not. But Alphaserver DS10, 466MHZ, running VMS 8.4, with Compaq Esoniq sound card, 256MB RAM, Oxygen 2D accelerator and one 137GB SCSI hard drive. With the right software it will play WAV and MP3 files, but video playback is awful with the stone age mu...
