Re: Well I finally got my O2...in a million pieces

My condolences, friend. That's a sad sight. Not to worry, though. You can probably get a non-working donor box on the cheap and swap the skins. Still it does suck! Freakin' shipper. The box looks like it was thrown around and drop kicked. Daayum!

Re: SATA in O2 with ARS-2160H

The exact same Rig (ARS-2160H) except with a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro drive instead of a 256GB. This time it's in a Tezro and it's NOT single ended jumpered, so it's smoking along at U160 full tilt. bash-4.2# diskperf -D -W -r4k -m16m /testfile #---------------------------------------------------------...

Re: Tezro blank Irix boot / Irix install - PROM OK

Oh and one more thing. I'm pretty sure it's booting up into Irix after I hit the green light "start system" icon from the graphical PROM menu. However, as I mentioned, it blanks out. The interesting thing is that if you hit the power button on the front of the tower, it starts gracefully s...

Tezro blank Irix boot / Irix install - PROM OK

I just got a Tezro it's an old Discrete rig with 800Mhz x 4 with 6GB of RAM. You see a fair number kitt'd like this with dual fiber HBAs, DM3's, and dual-port gigabit cards. Trouble is, I hook up the V12 to a standard monitor (DVI - sync on green capable NEC MultiSync 1860NX) and it works like champ...

Re: guidance needed

Chimera runs fine under Linux, OSX, and Windows, too. I doubt you'll need to have an SGI in order to get by in class. However, judging from the archived Chimera binaries for Irix (just downloaded it and fiddled around), you'd probably want an O2 with at least 256MB of RAM. It's pretty lightweight an...

Re: SGI InfiniteStorage array halts boot

If your version of Debian uses Grub (most likely if it's anything in the last 5 or so years) you want to check your grub.conf or menu.lst files usually found in /boot/grub and look for the kernel boot line that says "root=SOMETHING" change SOMETHING to your actual root file system. Lots of...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Heheh, Soooo, then I'd say of systemd that it's merely 99% terrible and the reason to do it was there, but extremely ill conceived and annoying to the enlightened and anointed folks who have actually seen the holy white shining light of Unix and don't care if it makes Android or Fedora faster to boo...

Is this what the Internet will become entirely [...] ? From what I have seen out there, it already has become a terrible wasteland; google friendly text entombed in auto-refreshing image links for faux-articles and various cookie-bombed advertisement. Pixels of attractive women in bikinis, head rem...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

All of these systems have disadvantages, and I have plenty of complaints about today's "user friendly" Linux distro, but completely writing off something like SMF or systemd as "ruined" or "heresy" isn't productive. I know I've just walked into a place specifically for...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Maybe they took a page from Slowlaris and SMF that came out with (and ruined) Solaris 10. It's got even more problems than systemd in terms of being some blasphemy against Unix. How did SMF "ruin" Solaris 10, and what makes it a "blasphemy against Unix?" It solved a lot of probl...

Re: Wishing to build an ultra-silent O2

on my O2 the fans are hellacious and even manage some nice high pitched whine that really pisses others in the house with nearly silent PCs....I'm getting a new 4x1Ghz Tezro If an O2 pissed 'em off you better go ahead a gird your loins in preparation for the arrival of your Tezro. :D Yeah, I think ...

Re: Anyone really know the SCSI spec for Tezro's internal SC

Awesome! I'm glad to hear that it works on the Tezro. Yeah, I'll probably do the same trick and pull the CDROM out and replace it with some 4x 2.5" SATA disks. I'm a little confused about what can be done in a Tezro for a native SATA interface. Some folks seem to indicate that those cards only ...

Re: Wishing to build an ultra-silent O2

The real trick here is the fans. The acard adapter works like a champ in my R12k 400Mhz o2. The adapter is utterly silent when you load it with an SSD. However, on my O2 the fans are hellacious and even manage some nice high pitched whine that really pisses others in the house with nearly silent PCs...

Re: ImgTech releases "Warrior" series MIPS.

The naming/numbering is a little confusing. I wonder which MIPS CPU in the SGI lineup it's most related to. I doubt it's the R5k just because it's too old, even if the numbering is "5600". I wish I could get a modern 22nm MIPS compatible chip somehow shoehorned into an SGI and jedi mind tr...
