Re: Things to buy....

Sadly to say, I think that gamers are also partially to blame for the 16:9 ratio, as a wider aspect ratio is beneficial when playing games. (As it best matches the average persons field if view, when sitting at the correct distance from the monitor.) Well, games do work better on a widescreen monit...

Re: Things to buy....

Why 16:10? The professional film world all use 4k and better monitors, but they are all 1.78:1. Of course, the needs of the industry are met as they are working on the aspect ratio that will be displayed to the end user. The only thing 16:10 would get you is the ability to display older European fi...

Re: Installing Firefox on Octane. Lots of dependencies.

Is the TBZ file format a zipped Tar as well? gunzip then tar -xvf? Yep, the extension gives you a clue :) (TBZ - T ar that's been BZ ipped). Just the same as .tar.bz in other words. As previously mentioned, "bzip2 -dc [filename] | tar xf -" will extract it in one single command. For GZipp...

Re: High Impact or Max Impact?

It's the EISA card I have in mine. Jan-jaap is correct that it does pull some CPU (I tend to get around 30% CPU load when transferring stuff). Performance wise, I get around 5MB/s from it - which is due to the limitations of the EISA bus. Advantages, well it's easier to find and cheaper than the Pho...

Re: High Impact or Max Impact?

Well, if you're going to use an Indycam with it, then it makes sense to try and get an IMPACT Video card for it. I remember using the Indycam back when I had my Indy, it was quite impressive for an early 90s PC, much better than PC webcams of the time.

Re: High Impact or Max Impact?

Personally, I'd say the 100Mb Network has to be a high priority. 10Mb is decidedly slow, and I'm very glad I've got a 100Mb NIC in my own Indigo2. Ultimately though, it depends on your use. IMPACT Video is interesting, but would you use it? Personally I only see the point of adding a card to a machi...

Re: Installing Firefox on Octane. Lots of dependencies.

Another option as well is that diegel has made a "bundle" package for Firefox that includes all the dependencies: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16730683

Re: Things that make your blood boil

I beg to differ, sort of. Although I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means, I only buy classical music on cd, with a strong preference for early music which has had a golden age especially since the 1980es up unto the present day. The recording quality on modern recordings is usually fan...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

HD (not 1080 or full-hd) was a gazillion times better than a snowy, ghosty NTSC signal even with the same antenna. Kids these days don't know how good they have it. 8-) Oh when it comes to TV broadcast, I agree HD is a massive improvement. I think that's part of the problem. HD TV was becoming a bi...

Yes, much better. The one in current is a bit buggy, diegel continued to fix it quite considerably and the one in Beta is both faster and more stable.

Re: Things that make your blood boil

The whole high-res audio one annoys me too in general. Especially as the resolution of the audio makes little difference as long as music continues to be brickwalled and dynamically compressed to shit during the mastering process. High-resolution shit is still shit... Another one that annoyed me no ...

Re: How to fix "out of range" on Octane now?

Check the aspect ratio options in the menu on your monitor. My ViewSonic monitor for example has a "1:1" mode that displays the requested resolution with no stretching, hence if I select this and then select a lower resolution, I get the black bars. There should be options to ensure the re...

Re: How to fix "out of range" on Octane now?

I believe single user mode will allow this. User "single" from the PROM to boot into single user mode, then use the command Irinkus mentioned to change the resolution, then reboot. Note, haven't tried this myself, but I'm sure someone will confirm and/or correct anything I've said that's w...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

For me, I guess the two main things are that it must have at least some use, and there has to be some nostalgia there as well. Now when I say some use, it doesn't need to be a unique use - everything I do on my Indigo2/Fuel I could probably do easily enough on my main PC - but I like finding modern-...
