Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Not really. It took something along the lines of a Pentium II 350 to be able to play DVD quality video back without stuttering. Back when I had a Pentium 233, I had a dedicated DVD decoder card to allow smooth playback. Without it, it would stutter like crazy and only VideoCDs and MPEG1 type formats...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

The Indigo2 Impact is an awesome system and definitely on my to-do list for all of the reasons you mentioned. Indeed, it's not a super quick system by later SGI standards of course (my Fuel can run rings around it performance wise). You have to remember of course that the motherboard technology is ...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

For me, the Indigo2 has to be one of the more solid systems - but the higher end Max IMPACT cards are a lot more fragile than Solid IMPACT due to TRAM issues. Part of the issue with later systems as well is that SGI was doing a lot more poorly financially, so some corners were cut to try and reduce ...

A DVI-I cable should also work, and might be a lot easier to find.

As far as I know, that should work fine.

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

I suspect he's on drugs of some kind (You know Europe - legal drugs and all!) and probably blames us for things that are hilariously not our faults. Wouldn't surprise me. He went on loads about the eBay situation he had a couple of years ago. Even when I said that (IMHO - given my limited knowledge...

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

He emailed me personally to bitch about this in his usual barely-coherent fashion a couple months back, as well...guy's really got a screw loose. Me too. I actually did swap a few e-mails with him until the his following personality traits led me to ignoring him: 1) Makes claims that he cannot supp...

Re: A snapshot of what you've got.

With a good fan replacement, the Fuel can become a quiet system too. Mine is quieter than my fan-modded Indigo2, although admittedly not as quiet as my Nocturna O2. I mainly use my Fuel for compiling, seeing as it's so much quicker than my Indigo2.

Re: Want a SGI workstation for really cheap (<50€) or free

In short, you either wait (whilst keeping your eyes open) and hope to get lucky, try and pick up a broken system for peanuts and hope to repair it cheaply, or do some digging around by speaking to recycling firms on the off-chance that they get something in that they're happy to offload cheaply (or ...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

Your right, you even see this with SGI machines, a quad 1GHz Tezro node board VS the quad 800MHz (Huge price difference there) or the dual 600MHz Octane2 CPU module for example. True, but supply does play a part. For example, the R10k 195MHz option for Indigo2 is not too expensive as plenty were pr...

And interestingly, I've always been impressed with the sound quality from my Indigo2. Always thought my music sounds better from it than from my PC - of course the PC does have pretty bog-standard onboard audio...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

It's an interesting one alright. With my SGIs, I did have price limits of what I was prepared to pay. Fuel prices a few years ago were low enough for me to justify it, but at the moment one from your site would be out of my price range to be honest. About the only time I've spent what you could cons...
