Re: Computer with a real serial port

You can get PCMCIA cards for laptops that add proper hardware ports. I have a parallel port one for an old laptop of mine. Or, the Dell Latitude D630 is a good bet. Core 2 Duo, can take 4GB of RAM and an SSD if required, runs Windows 7 fine (or whatever else you want), and has a proper serial port o...

Re: Newbee needs help with error message...

As others have said, I'd recommend replacing the disk and going for a fresh IRIX install (you should be able to find IRIX CDs on eBay if you look around, and the Indy can install IRIX over the network - check out Dina for this). The Indy will take some 80pin SCA drives with an adapter, so you can fi...

Re: A smear campaign against nekochan.net mods on reddit

It's amusing that he thinks that we're trying to harass him Let's look at the facts: * Registered here (ivelegacy), posted for a while, eventually got banned. * Sent a number of e-mails to forum members complaining about being banned (I got one, I didn't reply). * Came back with a new nick (Y06699 o...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

Exactly how dangerous is this flaw? According to the link "It allows normal user programs – from database applications to JavaScript in web browsers – to discern to some extent the layout or contents of protected kernel memory areas" - so does this mean a web page could silently read my p...

Re: Backing up data / licenses?

I use xfsdump within IRIX to clone the system drives in my SGIs every couple of months or so, and have 2-3 drives I rotate round as clone drives. It's more of a faf on the Fuel as it involves opening it up to add the clone drive properly to the SCSI bus - Indigo2 has the removable drive sleds to mak...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

I do not buy AMD because I cannot take the performance hit (Benchmarks of Ryzens show abysmal single thread performance compared to Haswell Xeons) and because I do not wish to support their poor quality chips. I have to confess to being a bit perplexed by this. First of all, it's rather unfair to c...

Re: Hard drives from storage arrays

Must admit, I've never had problems with SCA drives in my Fuel, and I've used lots of OEM Dell/HP/IBM ones acquired from various decommissioned servers at work. For the Indigo2, it's a bit more hit and miss as some drives won't auto-negotiate down to the FastSCSI bus in the Indigo2. I'd guess around...

Re: your latest purchase

My latest purchase is a boring one really - a new PC at long last to replace my ageing old system (from 2009 originally). Specs are an AMD Ryzen 7 1700X, 16GB RAM, GeForce 1070 Ti, 1TB M2 SSD, and four 3TB rust spinners for data storage. All running Windows 7 (given that Windows 10 is still such a m...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

Well, your main options are: * Transferring via network (which really isn't bad, and is my preferred option as it's by far the easiest - Sharity is available for IRIX and will allow you to natively mount Windows shares on IRIX as another alternative to FTP or NFS shares) - note you don't need Intern...

Re: [MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH!] Indigo² PSU Pinouts

Good job getting this far! I imagine though that the ATX PSU requirements may drop a bit depending what graphics you use. For example, anyone know how much SolidIMPACT pulls in comparison to MaxIMPACT?

The funny thing is that he objected so strongly when I called him out as a hypocrite over this in my e-mail exchanges with him. He acted like the total victim when his e-mail address and name were briefly mentioned here - despite one of his final threats to "post PMs and the full names of those...

Re: Indigo² PSU Pinouts

Good work! It would be great if eventually the Indigo2 PSU output was well known enough to create another Kuba-style adapter :)
