Re: The Problem with Apple

And as far as "expandability" goes, who stores more than a few dozen gigabytes of data locally anymore? I can't remember the last time I filled up my laptop's SSD. I've got my music collection, and that's about it. Documents/spreadsheets go on google docs, everything else goes to my NAS. ...

Re: WTB-Indigo2 Stuff

Agreed. If that fails, R4400 CPUs are usually not expensive - at least up to 200MHz, so buying one of these is also worth a punt. Even if your current CPU is OK, it's still a potential upgrade. The only real issue is if the motherboard has failed.

Re: WTB-Indigo2 Stuff

It's difficult to say. Old PSUs can misbehave in many ways. My Indigo2 is on its second PSU. Originally, I had an issue a couple of times with the system randomly powering off after a few hours of use. I also had an issue whereby it would sporadically not boot at all (fans powered up, but no LEDs at...

Re: No graphics out from Indigo2

What settings are you using for the serial connection? There is some information here about cables and settings: http://oss.sgi.com/mips/i2-howto.html In short, 9600 baud, 8 bits and one stop bit. According to my Indigo2 manual, a solid amber LED means either failed graphics, or failed CPU board. Yo...

Word of warning, cross posting the same thing multiple times is a sure fire way to get a slap on the wrist from the mods and actually put people off from getting involved. One thread is enough please!

Not in bad shape that second system! Good to see the CD drive cover is also intact. And it's got the original logo, which is just better :)

Re: No video out from Indigo2

Pop the drive out as well. It should reach the PROM screen fine with no hard drive attached. Unlikely to be the cause of the issue, but every little helps! For the serial cable, you'll need another machine with a serial port (or a serial to USB adapter). You can then see what messages are being gene...

Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

I'd like to find a Banana2k prototype, but I'm not even sure if any exist. Apparently it did reach prototype stage (dual core MIPS, nVidia graphics). Would be pretty cool!

From the fold mark, I'd say it's those square sheets you get in public bathrooms. They'd fit OK.

Re: Thank You!

PSUs are currently the main sticking point, but kubatyszko's ATX adapters should make a big difference here. Ian Mapleson practically doubled all his Fuel prices a couple of years ago after almost completely running out of PSUs (thankfully I bought mine from him a couple of weeks before the price-hi...

Re: Using fsn on an Indigo2

It's certainly worth trying. It runs OK on my Indigo2. I do have the R10000, but only SolidImpact graphics. But as robespierre says, it doesn't use texturing, so should run at least to a reasonable degree on your Indigo2!

Re: SGI O2 Skins

Depends how much the skins weigh. Ian lists US shipping costs for under 2kg packages at about £35. It might be worth dropping him an e-mail just to see as he does change couriers from time to time, so I'm not sure how up-to-date it'll be. Of course, if you find a set in the US, it'll likely be cheap...
