Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

And lo, several someones have written Emacs extensions to turn it into a spreadsheet...every time I make a joke about Emacs, I go and look it up afterward and find out that it's actually the case.

That's the other 5%.

(Though I would bet money that somebody has written an Emacs extension to turn it into a spreadsheet. But the problem with that is you'd have to use Emacs.)

95% of everything that people do in "office suites" can be done satisfactorily in a good text editor.

Re: your latest purchase

JP-8000's a cool little keyboard - kind of the first wave of "virtual analog," but unlike a lot of Roland's very blah later VA offerings it actually has its own distinctive character to it.

Anyway, my SEM got here today and it is glorious :D

Re: Car Talk

That's right, you have a bug right? Pics please! Do you do your own work on it? Heh :D Here she is. It's a 1969 Beetle with a rebuilt 1971 1.6L engine from the previous owner. Not the prettiest, but under the pockmarks the body's in good shape, and it runs very well. (For being almost fifty years o...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Because it's not as good at being x86 as the other options, and only somewhat better at hitting a power/performance sweet spot than a decent i5, and if you don't need x86 specifically I have no idea what you're doing looking at Atoms to begin with...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Atom is surprisingly performant for what it is, but its main use is to give you something that's usable in a netbook form factor if you also require x86 compatibility. Beyond that, it has pretty much nothing to recommend it. ARM is indeed underpowered compared to other architectures; the frustrating...

The nicest one I've personally owned was my R61, but the X201 I'm using as a daily driver now is quite nice as well.

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Yep. The Thinkpads aren't perfect (I still long for a modern laptop with a trackball, and newer Thinkpads changed out the keyboard for one of those irritating flat-topped variants,) but they're head and shoulders above almost everything else in the field.

Yeah, it's a weird arrangement for a tiny trackpad, plus a rather cramped chiclet keyboard.

The Pinebook would be interesting to me if it weren't yet another goddamn Chromebook with the fucking clickpad and chiclet keyboard. Ye gods.

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

That's kinda what I suspected. Really though I should just get my Orange Pi setup rolling, only there's a lot of BS involved in getting it to work with monitors that are *gasp* *shock* not 1080p . Well, anyway, I did manage to get this far, in that I got Debian rolling with a boot script that deliv...

After like a year waiting for Sweetwater to get them back in stock, I've finally plunked down for an Oberheim SEM reissue (patch-panel edition.) Looking forward to finally getting this :)

Re: CP/M-80 ADA on HPPA linux

Ah, sweet :D Do share the code when you've got it all sorted out - there's a handful of CP/M emulators out there, but the only ones I'm aware of that provide transparent access to the host filesystem are DOS-only.
