Re: The Problem with Apple

And as far as "expandability" goes, who stores more than a few dozen gigabytes of data locally anymore? Man, I've got dozens of gigabytes of data just in my games folder alone, and I'm not even the kind of person who plays modern AAA titles where "normal" is ~20 GB apiece. And t...

Re: your latest purchase

Sweet :D

As for stands, some of the Portawhatevers have mounting holes for what I assume is a model-specific screw-in stand, but I've never seen one in the wild. I'd just get a ~$30 X-stand from your local music store.

Re: Have any one seen any good anime lately?

Cowboy Bebop is the goods. NGE is more hit-and-miss, but when it's good it's pretty damn good.

Anyway, I just finished powering through K-On! and revisiting Nichijou. Good fun all around.

A Lisp machine, a machine based on one of the Forth chips, or an original HP 3000-series (pre-PA-RISC-emulation-thereof) would be interesting to mess around with.

Re: WTB: Alpha in desktop/minitower form factor

Well, Windows NT for Alpha can at least run x86 software in emulation. No idea what the Tru64 software scene is like, though.

Re: WTB: Alpha in desktop/minitower form factor

PC164SX/LX boards show up from time to time on eBay for pretty cheap - one of those, some RAM, a hard drive, and any decent ATX case (plus some PCI cards) should get you rolling.

Re: your latest purchase

Nice :) With the DX7, be sure to look into it a bit and decide which model you want - the DX7-II is a better performance instrument since it has more patch memory, can store controller settings per-voice, and can split/layer two different sounds, but the original model is no slouch itself (both of t...

Re: your latest purchase

Oh sweet :) I briefly thought it shared the kickass demo tune of the PSR-48 (my aunt and uncle used to have that one, and I obsessed over it for years afterward until I finally tracked it down and picked one of my own up,) but it turns out that's the PSR-38 I was thinking of. But on the other hand, ...

Re: PowerPC Macs - Are They Still Useful?

Shooting on the whole isn't really my thing, but it certainly does have its charms. Last summer I went to a range with my brother and got to fire a Barrett M82 .50 caliber rifle. Only time I've ever experienced a frame-skip in real life. Time was neatly divided into two discrete halves - everything ...

Re: PowerPC Macs - Are They Still Useful?

Linux support on the G5 is iffy at best. PowerPC big endian is being obsoleted, like Alpha was years ago in most distributions. Hmm, really? I hadn't kept up in quite a while. Looks like Debian doesn't even have big-endian 64-bit in the default install CDs, though 32-bit is still there. Looks like ...
