Re: your latest purchase

Super jealous! I'd love to have an A3000.

Raion-Fox wrote:They were very expensive. Total I spent about $900 on the collection.

I mean, A3000's go for like ~$600 by themselves. It's a lot of money, but not too bad all things considered.

Re: Computer with a real serial port

I use an old monochrome 486 Dell Latitude as a kind of portable serial terminal, but that's not much help to you as you want to run Linux or BSD (I run DOS 6.22/Win 3.11 on mine). I agree with Raion-Fox, an older ThinkPad would be good. Alternatively, if you have a newer laptop with an Express...

Re: your latest purchase

This is an " Altairduino ". It's an MITS Altair 8800 simulator that runs on an Arduino Due. Certainly the closest I'll get to owning an Altair any time soon, and easier to keep maintained. It's slightly smaller than a real Altair front panel, and has both USB and Serial ports. My only com...

Just got this nice thing in the mail (excuse the reflections, this thing is real shiny): https://i.imgur.com/EMlIOu6.jpg This is an " Altairduino ". It's an MITS Altair 8800 simulator that runs on an Arduino Due. Certainly the closest I'll get to owning an Altair any time soon, and easier ...

Ah, wasn't aware you needed official support. ECC will at least work in AMD's consumer grade systems, whereas with Intel they won't.

I'm pretty sure both Ryzen and Threadripper support ECC RAM (depending on motherboard).

This is true. Unlike Bull's AIX Freeware site, which seems to have crashed (and has been down for almost a week).

If/when it comes back up, I'm going to have to download everything there as well. Just in case.

Haha, yup! Exactly like so. They seem reasonably rare, at least for those of us who didn't buy them back when they got taken out of service (Boeing, IIRC used a lot of them).

Huh, wasn't even aware of the Intergraph systems. Very neat!

End of HP-UX 11.11 and 11.23 Binaries

Did anyone else notice this announcement on hpux.connect.org.uk ? All packages built for HP-UX releases older than HP-UX 11v3 (11.31 Itanium and 11.31 PA-RISC) will be deleted on 31st August 2018 and are now marked as "Deprecated" on the individual package pages. Looks like I've got a litt...

Re: Two questions, one quick and one less so

I suppose I could do that, but I'd have to drop either the Ethernet card or sound card. I wish the 7011 had three MCA slots instead of two. Would make things much easier. I do have the original drive that came with the machine (1GB narrow SCSI). AIX 4.3.3 is a bit big for a 1GB drive, though.

Here's a list of machines I've had an eye out for, for a long time: Apple Lisa (not actually that rare, just super expensive) Axil S/420 (really any Axil or Integrix clone system) Bull Escala DPX/20 (or any PPC Bull system, really) Canon Object.Station Castle Technology Iyonix PC Data General Aviion...

Heads up, lordcrimson is an alias of Carlo. I have confirmed it from his new site he started: "http://2.238.179.124/wonderland/" Why does he number his posts on that forum: "mypost(2/21) sata bay hack", for instance. He hasn't even posted 21 things in that thread, and in any cas...

Re: Two questions, one quick and one less so

I know there was a desire to get an open source driver going. MCA soundcards are pretty thin on the ground, and I believe the hobbyists wanted a driver so they could use them in PS/2s (presumably in DOS or Win 3.x). As is, I think there's only drivers for AIX and NT, and then only the official IBM o...
