Re: your latest purchase

I have a soft spot for the Plus. It was the first Mac I ever touched (ca. 1987). I also have a 4MB one (called "Mr T") but my compact Mac of choice is a Mystic Colour Classic these days.

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

Yes, if I were in the market for an Intel workstation, I think I'd probably strongly consider the Z8 too. So much of my old software doesn't work on modern macOS that there's really no advantage to sticking with it anymore.

Re: Is it Solaris 1.0 ?

Sun did call at least some versions of SunOS 4 "Solaris 1." However, it has really very little to do architecturally with Solaris in the strictest sense and I always found that confusing/obnoxious.

You work so hard to get a decent collection together, why on earth would you part with it after all the effort you put in?

Because the wife says so? ;)

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

Apple always criminally undercached their designs. It reached its nadir during the G5 days, but even the MDD G4 was pretty starved. hot swap PCI cards (really) This is one of the things I really love about these high end boxes. I took the side panel off my POWER6 and told AIX I was going to put in a...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

Except for the POWER5+ Intellistation, which is still a hot-running system but has really nice comparative performance thanks to a decent SMT-2 implementation, my reservations still apply to the 970-based Intellistations. But in this case, because of its close relationship to the POWER4 the 970 is m...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

I've always wondered why IBM dropped the feature on the G5. The more I work on the metal of the G5, the more it's clear it was a hurry-up job on IBM's part to pacify Apple. It is the only Mac that uses PowerPC v2.0 encoding (that means at-bits on branches instead of y-bits, meaning every piece of s...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

I read that article. Interesting that the Feds would have a backdoor (privacy is for me, not thee), though the article cautions at the end that "unfortunately this mode does not protect against exploitation of errors at earlier stages." I'd rather just not have the bloody thing there in th...

Re: Rumors of Oracle ending Solaris development

Good news for IBM and, to a lesser extent, HPE. They'll be more than happy to swoop in to fill the void and IBM can point to its long POWER support for shops nervous about going non-prop. The x86 shops probably don't make Snoracle enough bread, either. If Larry's intent was to ship the whole stack, ...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

They don't really have a fully-fledged DOM, which is actually a bigger issue than simply running JavaScript, for which they were simply going to adopt Mozilla SpiderMonkey. This makes good sense since it runs just fine on architectures for which no JIT is defined (unlike V8).

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

Yes, definitely more is available for OS X PPC, but the machines that can run it are limited.

But qemu emulation is becoming more mature on that front, so a beast like a Talos can be the best of both worlds.
