Re: Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD

Interesting! For comparaison sake, here are some diskperf result I posted long ago about FC-AL enclosure plugged into FC-AL XIO card in an Octane2. Perf is for a single disk as the enclosure is not raided or stripped etc. I think it would be a cheaper way to achieve fast I/O than using SSD. Cobalt 1...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Not that it will necessarily make a huge difference for video playback (I'm not knowledgeable here), but what graphics hardware does your Octane2 have? It's a dual head with V12/V10. I performed the video test with the V10 but I doubt it makes any difference. It's really the decoding part that caus...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

The Octane2 R14K 600MHz is an awesome machine and in my opinion a very good machine to focus your resources on, to keep it running well into the future. (it runs IRIX properly) :D Yes it is an awesome machine. Yet I was saddened the other day to discover it couldn't even play more than 480p videos,...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I only run an Octane and an O2. I have almost every part in double (or triple sometimes). I even have a spare dual R14K/600Mhz module for the Octane just in case. Every once in a while when I'm short on money I'm thinking about selling it but then I think "what if the damn thingamabob fails ? I...

Re: MPlayer won't compile

Great news ! Eager to try the thing ! BTW, I was slightly disappointed the other day. I found the right cable to connect my Octane2 (2x600Mhz) to my new LCD and immediately proceeded to test some videos. I hadn't realized that mplayer on a dual 600 machine wasn't able to play 720p videos. Max is 480...

Re: WTB : SGI compliant female 13W3 to male VGA cable (short length OK)

Quick update : I found a supplier for 13W3 cables with the right genre and pinout. http://www.cablematic.fr/rechercheur/13w3/1_comma_2-m-cable-RVB-Video-_open_parenthesis_1xHD15_hyphen_M_slash_1x13W3_hyphen_H_close_parenthesis_/VG40/?pag=1 They have everything needed and with the right SGI pinout. Yes, Like this but for SGI. Those for sale on ebay are usually for Sun and pinout is slightly different than SGI.

Re: WTB : SGI compliant female 13W3 to male VGA cable (short length OK)

Just one question: Are you sure that you won't need some kind of signal booster for a video cable of that length(100ft)? As you might loose signal fidelity due to losses incurred due to the length of the cable. Edit: according to this table, you should be able to get away with it. IMG_2601.PNG I wo...

Re: WTB : SGI compliant female 13W3 to male VGA cable (short length OK)

I don't have an adapter to sell you, but holy crap, a 100ft 13w3 cable??? Was it intended for having an Onyx rack in a server room and monitor at a desk or something? Were the keyboard and mouse also extended to that length? I didn't know such a thing even existed. Haha yeah holy crap ! I found it ...

Re: WTB : SGI compliant female 13W3 to male VGA cable (short length OK)

Thanks for your reply ! I just contacted Michael before posting here but his adapter is Male 13W3 and he doesn't build female one. I need female 13W3. I don't want plug it directly into the Octane but at the end of my 100ft 13W3 cable.

WTB : SGI compliant female 13W3 to male VGA cable (UPDATE : FOUND!)

I need to plug the thing into a 100 ft 13W3 cable coming out of an Octane in the basement into a modern flat panel monitor. If you have that for sale or can build one, please contact me. Thanks in advance.

Re: Your first SGI encounter

Met an SGI Indy for the first time during an internship at Thomson Training & Simulation (now called Thales Training & Simulation) in 1995. Working on a nuclear power plant simulator (!!). I spent more time playing Doom during that summer than real programming to tell the truth. But my first...

Re: Whats it like living in japan?

7) DO NOT even think of working for traditional Japanese company - you'd have to conform to the stupid rules and stuff, if you're thinking of moving to Japan the easiest thing for foreigners is to become English teachers (but these days you'd need to be be native speaker). It's actually possible to...
