Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running
I'm not worried about maintaining old hardware for years to come. I have some experience in old synths/guitar amps etc. I have a big collection. There's at least three machines broken at anytime, while about a hundred are working fine. Sometimes it takes months to find the right part for the repair ...

Re: mplayer 1.3.0
That's an excellent move ! I was shocked when I discovered that I couldn't even play 720p videos using current mplayer on my dual 600 Octane 2. I think porting back from a newer version using parts of the old version might be easier than the opposite.

Re: ADAT. And the secret is...
Toslink used for audio is either adat or spdif format. In the case of Octane, it is adat. 8 channel of audio up to 24bit/48kHz. I got it working using some recording equipment with the same format. There nothing special to do, just check that the freq is the same both side. Normally one side is the ...

Re: Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.
I've done it and it works. You can also do the same with another device : Dr Bott SGI Saver. You can sometimes find them cheap on ebay. I've never seen one of these for sale. I mean, amazon seems to have them but they are more expensive than the multi link adapter... also it shows a picture of some...

FWIW, I recently bought a cheap 32'' ips monitor : https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00229400.html It's sold in the US too on amazon : https://www.amazon.com/RAEAN-Tech-REX-32-QHD-2560x1440/dp/B075GGJGKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515682856&sr=8-1&keywords=RAEAN+tech+REX+QHD It's a QHD resolutio...

Re: Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.
I have an HP EliteDisplay E241i for my Mac Pro, it simply will not display the image from the Octane properly. Colour is washed out and the image sits halfway across the panel. Picture halfway across the panel, usually it's because the display needs a VFO with certain reduced blanking values. I let...

Re: Cryptocurrency?
I don't think there's anything to worry about. Yes, it's possible to build an expert system that is capable of beating a human at a board game, but an AI that not only exceeds, but is capable of overwhelming the entirety of the of the human presence on this planet? No conceivable way, not now, not ...

Re: Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.
I would like to just get an SGI multilink adaptor, Then maybe the 13w3 out to vga would then be converted properly by the multilink adaptor to show the Octane on a 1600sw. Honestly never seen an Octane displayed on an 1600sw. I've done it and it works. You can also do the same with another device :...

Re: Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD
Interesting! For comparaison sake, here are some diskperf result I posted long ago about FC-AL enclosure plugged into FC-AL XIO card in an Octane2. Perf is for a single disk as the enclosure is not raided or stripped etc. I think it would be a cheaper way to achieve fast I/O than using SSD. Cobalt 1...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running
Not that it will necessarily make a huge difference for video playback (I'm not knowledgeable here), but what graphics hardware does your Octane2 have? It's a dual head with V12/V10. I performed the video test with the V10 but I doubt it makes any difference. It's really the decoding part that caus...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running
The Octane2 R14K 600MHz is an awesome machine and in my opinion a very good machine to focus your resources on, to keep it running well into the future. (it runs IRIX properly) :D Yes it is an awesome machine. Yet I was saddened the other day to discover it couldn't even play more than 480p videos,...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running
I only run an Octane and an O2. I have almost every part in double (or triple sometimes). I even have a spare dual R14K/600Mhz module for the Octane just in case. Every once in a while when I'm short on money I'm thinking about selling it but then I think "what if the damn thingamabob fails ? I...

Re: MPlayer won't compile
Great news ! Eager to try the thing ! BTW, I was slightly disappointed the other day. I found the right cable to connect my Octane2 (2x600Mhz) to my new LCD and immediately proceeded to test some videos. I hadn't realized that mplayer on a dual 600 machine wasn't able to play 720p videos. Max is 480...
