Re: Sunfire v880 with XVR-4000

How do I set the mac up as a terminal, as I usually make use of a laptop with Windows XP on it? (hyper-terminal) I have always liked ZTerm for this. It's an old-school System 7 application that was ported to Carbon and then to Intel for OSX 10.7 and later. It gives you control of the serial line sp...

Re: low level format with FX

you must invoke fx with the -x flag to see all of the commands.
Then use label/set/geometry to change the block size, and then /format.

You can barely make out "FORE" stamped on the IO plate. Definitely an ATM card of some sort.
(ATM cards came in different speeds, with 25 Mbit/s and 155 Mbit/s being common.)

Re: Onyx rack start-up problem

1) What does it mean "sysctlr_getserial: got bad response char: '-1'" While I could guess, I don't know what that means. Some problem with the System Controller... does it store a serial number in its Dallas timekeeper? 2) There is no echo on serial console and I'm unable to select any op...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

The 3.45v rail is rated at 675Amps, that is instant death current. No, you would not even feel anything if you touched this power supply. It would be enough to instantly vaporize a screwdriver, but luckily we are not screwdrivers. 3.45V@675A does not tell you the behavior of the circuit without kno...

Re: SoftImage 3D 4.0 Install Help ?

Softimage should not have died. The fact that they sold themselves to Autodesk was a big surprise and sad for me. Everyone knew it was going to be pillaged for uses in Maya and Max. Maybe a small chance the sales would save it and it would stay relevant. BUT.... had they not sold or been bought by ...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

There are some things that are just objectively ridiculous:

This unit sells for $200-300 on any other day. Just being in mint condition doesn't make it worth ten times list price! And '80s nostalgia doesn't apply.

The main thing to avoid is touching them with your hands. There is some risk that the bitterant used in most duster cans could leave a deposit.

The NIC is the Dallas iButton that supplies the system ID. You'll find it on the corner of the IP30 board (or the empty socket where it should be...)

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Projection CRTs are more likely to be replaced for other reasons than just burning out. Burn-in on the phosphors is a big problem and it affects these tubes more than regular display units. You should be very careful about on-screen display characters, network bug logos, computer menus, or anything ...

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Projectors have a specified throw distance, which is the distance between the lens and screen at which it can focus. This will be specified with the lens (or with CRTs, lenses) that the projector can use. Unfortunately, from what I can see of some Barco literature, they choose to only print the scre...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

Very true, and I'll add a very important price factor, which is whether an item is the last or greatest version that was produced. It makes a machine much more desirable to hobbyists because they know it is better than the others of the same type or platform. For example, the Macintosh IIfx and SE/3...
