Re: Advice on repairing an SGI keyboard with damaged plug

Are the pins in the plug bent? If some sharp object was jammed into them it can easily happen.
See if you can straighten the pins with a jeweler's screwdriver (there are better tools but most people have that one).

Are you sure you have a 1394 to ATA adapter, and not 1394 to ATAPI? They are different.

Re: Restoring an Indy, have some questions

No! There's a specific way to open the case, and I also didn't understand it at first. The first important thing is that you need to turn the Indy so the "latch" is on the right side. (Part of the secret is that there is no latch at all! There is just a pair of tabs that you force apart). ...

Re: Battery in Octane PVO card?

There are international regulations that limit the capacity of batteries on passenger airlines, which are the reason the MacBook batteries (for example) have had the same capacity for years: they are at the limit. The PVO card does not use a battery.

Re: Dat compatibility question

DDS3 Sony SDT9000 was offered with custom audio-capable firmware. Before that was the DDS2 Seagate Peregrine (4326NP) which also supported audio with the custom firmware. If you don't care about audio, any DDS drive probably would work.

Re: iMac G3: Bizarre startup problem

Does the picture grow or shrink when you display different images? That points to a power supply or flyback problem.

Re: iMac G3: Bizarre startup problem

The "SCREEN" potentiometer controls the voltage of the G2 anode. Effectively, it repels electrons in the beam to decrease the current hitting the phosphor screen. The potentiometer interacts with a focus/screen voltage network which may be broken if you're seeing such wide swings in bright...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

There was something magical about conning the antenna to point at different satellites and seeing the image resolve. Like terrestrial pickup with a mast rotator, but cooler.

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Yes, I remember those cards. There were some interesting articles in 2600 magazine about the system (and hackers). I can still remember taking apart some satellite tuners and receivers for the unscrambled era (by the way, the dish antennas for C-band were gigantic—nobody was using those within city ...

Re: Random Tape reel to reel Italian Job style.

You'll have to remind me, does the movie feature streaming reel-to-reel tape or vacuum column units? There was a huge difference: the vacuum column tape drives were used as on-line storage by mainframes. The "random rewind/fast forward" was actually the tape seeking to specific blocks, and...

My experience with that is mostly with twin-tower machines, but I would be shocked if removing the side panel wasn't required. That area is very cramped.

The recommended way is to use GLUT. GLUT is simple.
There is also GLFW, which has been ported to Irix although I don't see it packaged here.

Re: Problem installing IRIX on my Tezro

It may be nothing, but I am a little surprised to see "boot file dksc(0,1,8)/sash" with a slash. The volhdr has no directories and I just don't expect a slash there. Additionally, the location of the sash file during installation is supposed to be the CDROM, not the hard disk, so it should...
