It's a nightmare to get a decent [S]VHS player, I've wasted tonnes.. until now!!

£30 got me the below, which after a head clean is working very well. Fingers very muchly crossed.

A directory called private failed. No surprise there.
3 root files failed, opengl, patches and README & a few other files.

Nice one Trippynet, I'm hopeful for 24bit colour ? I've been doing some research into this. In short, it's not an rdesktop issue. The problem is that 24bit support was retired by MS in RDP from Vista/Server 2008 onwards. Only 16bit and 32bit are supported (well, technically Vista and 2008 support 8...

Thanks Hoffman, I read through this, it seems I still have problems and missing few parts.. like I don't have compatible versions and I'd need a LINUX machine to be the host.

I then went on to look for an older version, so still fingers crossed. Thanks though.
