Re: your latest purchase

I'm apparently on a dead disk formats tear, as I bought both a Laserdisc player AND a MiniDisc Walkman... Ah, Laserdisc. Now you just need the unadulterated Star Wars trilogy... I just bought a Phillips Lazerdisc player and I have been watching a Star Wars disc on ebay. Think that's gone now though...

Re: your latest purchase

Oh look. Now I have TWO Panasonic PK-958 Newvicon pickup cameras. Did someone say stereo? ;) I totally love how they have a built-in character generator and to use it the camera has a flip-down keyboard. Wow Pentium, nice. I have two Sony Trinicon cameras with CVS and Betamax players, but you...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

I wonder about the popping of power supplies. Is it occurring when you completely disconnect power - remove the kettle lead so speak. I ask because touching wood, since I have power going to my machines all the time, yet turned off and on, I haven't suffered that for a few years now.

Re: ADAT. And the secret is...

Thanks for all the good answers chaps. So, could you go from the OUT on Octane A to the IN on Octane B ? [Edit] Well indeed you can, although set at 32hz rather than the default 48 (may be a red herring). Also the cheapo adaptor does work on the Digital Out port on the Octane (the cheapo device has ...

ADAT. And the secret is...

? OK, well, never had any joy getting ADAT working from an OCTANE. Tried a Sound Bar some time back that never worked, but then it never worked on anything including TVs, so I put that down to it was just FOOBAR'd. On a recommendation from a friend as a VERY cheap first port of call for testi...

Certainly rent a bit of time and run the old Lotto predicting computation program on it.

That's a floppy drive. They fit upside down.

Re: Spectre and Meltdown

The POWER6 is not vulnerable to Meltdown. It _is_ vulnerable to Spectre. It's not clear whether IBM will offer firmware patches for it yet. source: tested my own system with the PoC Hurrah for my POWER5 then. Not necessarily: POWER4 (and then most likely also PowerPC 970 and derivatives) and POWER5...

Re: Computer with a real serial port

I have two nice little 'SHUTTLE' boxes that come with real serial, very small base units. Can't recall the exact model, CPU is i3 with 16GB, SSD all of which I had to buy separately. They are mounted on my wall and I RDP into them, although you can use them directly with keyboard/mouse and they have...
