Re: Maya 6.5 IRIX performance?

I can tell you from personal experience that Maya on an O2 R5K machine really sucks. That's what I learned Maya on, and it was very sluggish. I have an Octane2 with Dual 600 CPU and V12 graphics. Maya works great on that machine - for an SGI. It's dog slow compared to what I have at work (NVIDIA K50...

Re: Rendering in Hardware

I'm a Maya user as well and have the exact spec'd machine you are looking at building. As far as features are concerned, I don't think there's any difference between the V8 and V12. It's mostly memory size and speed. You can always do some tests in Maya using the hardware renderer and see what the r...

Re: Infinite Reality vs. Infinite Performance

That does sound like a sweet system. Also sounds like a very expensive system. The RM 11's alone are hard to come by and expensive, let alone the 2 16 CPU Cx bricks.

Re: Infinite Reality vs. Infinite Performance

I guess the real question is this: If I want the most powerful graphics performance in a single rack system (think of it like the ultimate SGI workstation) to run off the shelf software - Maya, Alias, etc... - would that be a system based around the IP, or IR? I would imagine that having the IP syst...

Re: Infinite Reality vs. Infinite Performance

If two Onyx 350's are NUMAlinked, are they treated as a single, large system with the combined ram, CPU and graphics? If that's the case, do the graphics get their combined power to run a single display, or is each graphic pipe treated separately? Also, how would this type of a system integrate into...

Re: Infinite Reality vs. Infinite Performance

Thanks for all the info! The link Recondas sent comparing the performance of a single pipe v12 to a IR3 system was interesting to see. I wonder how a 4 pipe IP system with the compositor would compare to an IR3 or IR4. I'm wondering about all this in a single rack, not multiple racks. I'm just tryin...

Infinite Reality vs. Infinite Performance

Hi all, I have questions about the two "Big Iron" graphics options that SGI had available for Onyx systems back in the day. I've read a lot about the two different systems and what they technically are capable of, but I still have some questions. All these questions relate to a hypothetica...

Re: Need help from local GTA member

Thanks for the offer. I've got another PSU coming shortly, so hopefully that'll solve the issue. If not, then I'll post a reply here again, or PM you.

Thanks!

Need help from local GTA member

Hello fellow SGI users, I've recently had an issue with my machine (Octane 2) and I'm in need of some local support. I believe it's a failed PSU. It failed for sure, and I ordered a replacement from Ian's SGI Depot, but one week later I'm unable to boot the machine at all. I don't know if this new P...

Spaceball 5000 Serial - How to set up??

Hello all, I just purchased a 3Dconnexion Spaceball 5000 serial to use with my Octane in the hopes that I could get it working in Maya and StudioTools. I've tested the Spaceball on a windows machine and successfully used the demo that's a part of the driver. I know the unit works, as it beeps as wel...

Re: My computer died (I think)

*Update 2* It froze up during the self test and shut itself down. Power supply is still stinky, so I'm sure it needs to be replaced. I'm not about to take it apart and risk shocking myself to see if a capacitor is blown, or transistor or filter cap. I'll just have to track one down. Anyone got a spa...

Re: My computer died (I think)

***UPDATE*** I just powered it back on and it seems to be running! They don't make 'em like they used to! I'm currently doing a systems diagnostic check before booting into the OS. Hopefully all will be OK, but I have a feeling that the PSU is still in need of replacement. I'm still concerned about ...

My computer died (I think)

Hello everyone, I came home tonight to find my octane displaying no output to the scree, no fans moving, but piping hot! It also smelled like burnt plastic :( I turned pressed the power button on the front, but there was no change. I pulled the power cable out of the back and heard a click from insi...

Re: HELP!! My Octane said it committed SUICIDE!!

OK, every thing's all good now :) I managed to sort out the RAM issue and get the system back up and running and connect to my Mac Mini server. I realized that the server was set to go to sleep and that's why I got the "could not connect" error. I'm sure that the RAM that went bad was what...
