well, weeks ago I setup a vmware image with the L3 sw running, and I've simply installed an old redhat 9 as above suggested, too.

If I can offer a guess, they used the initial cover until supplies last ( thus gluing the extra badge on the improved units ), then moved to the new design

Did you try the ram you removed, in place of the 32mb ? ( Just to make sure )
If you did, try each of the 4 in combination with 3 of the 4 known working, to see how many modules failed ( no point in buying 4 if just one is faulty, by example )

You do have a point. I do wonder if there are alternatives to changing the chips. By example, would it be feasible to place a chip on top of the existing and ensure contacts at least temporarily, to identify the culprit ? Then fixing it permanently on top in parallel, and cut the power pins to the f...

It seems a good price for that kind of service ( seems quite a quality one, if they do all they mention ) and to replace all 3 chips. Maybe it would be worth to service also the V10 ( has one i2c too ) and the cpu module ? (assuming it would be a marginal extra if done at the same time vs as a separ...
