Re: xVidGrab -- Make -- Install issues

Alas, it's time to make the post I've been dreading: I have failed. With much effort, I got xvidcap to build on IRIX. I'd initially thought it would be a nice Saturday afternoon project. (Or less!) It ended up taking all of my free time for several days. (I was too stubborn for my own good!) The res...

Firstly, the work he's done to try and bring some of his work and theories to the masses - In other words he had an ability to see through a lot of the cruft and to get to the point. Re: New to SGI, not really sure what I've got my hands on.

Here's the inside. There's no graphics subsystem, so it seems to be an Origin 350. My guess is that it's labelled Onyx 350 because it came from SGI as one node of a 2 node Onyx 350 Infinite Performance rig. Does that sound plausible? It's plausible, but it's more likely they were part of an even la...

Re: xVidGrab -- Make -- Install issues

That's correct that the video panel won't come up without video daemon running, which in turn is only applicable with a hardware video capture device (O2, Octane PVO, etc.) installed. I don't think dmrecord will capture from screen on an Octane; its man page only talks about the various video compre...

Re: xVidGrab -- Make -- Install issues

I had a chance to dig into this a little further last night. It's not going to be a simple thing to compile on IRIX. There's some porting effort required. It doesn't look too bad, but it's more than just "compile and run". I could list several problems I've discovered if somebody else want...

Re: xVidGrab -- Make -- Install issues

Uh-oh. The errors in make_output2.txt stem from the fact that X11/Xlib.h was NOT included before X11/extensions/XShm.h in src/app-data.c of the xvidcap sources. Digging into it, xvidcap only includes X11/Xlib.h if HAVE_LIBXFIXES is defined by the configure process. And since Xfixes doesn't exist on ...

Re: C2-6400 DRAM ***ONLY*** for AMD?!?!?

It just occurred to me that there's another reason that the seller might (mistakenly) think it won't work with an Intel board: Kingston also sells memory (at a small price premium) that's certified to be compatible with Intel's motherboards. The main difference is that the certified stuff has been t...

Re: C2-6400 DRAM ***ONLY*** for AMD?!?!?

Memory controllers are typically integrated into the CPU these days, so it is theoretically possible for memory to be CPU-specific. But in this case, that statement contradicts Kingston's own documentation. If you visit the Kingston web page for that module and click on "Show all systems that w...

Re: SGI Fuel with Ryzen 5 2400G?

Very interesting to compare Raion-Fox's and Dodoid's approach. It's hard to know in advance which approach is going to work best with any particular listener. So I'd say it's a good thing we've got guys like these two taking very different approaches to the same situation. Next time around, who kno...

Re: 13w3 to VGA on Octane2

It looks like the same adapter I use on both my Octane (SE graphics) and Indigo2 (Solid Impact) with my SoG-capable monitor and no problems. I doubt Octane2 would be different enough to matter, but I'm can't be 100% certain it'll work with your specific setup. Worth a try, IMHO.

Re: your latest purchase

I recently received a DECstation 5000/125. Fortunately it came complete with an LK401 keyboard and the proprietary little breakout cable to connect it. No mouse or other cables, but I already had a suitable VSXXX-AA mouse and a 3W3-to-BNC monitor cable. I plugged that in to a BNC-to-VGA converter a...

Re: Solaris 11.4 open beta

The situation with the 11.4 beta is worse than I realized. I knew support for the Sparc-based workstations such as the Blade 2500 was dropped when Solaris 11 first came out. But it seems that everything older than the T4 series machines has been dropped as of 11.4 according to the official documenta...

Re: HP-UX compilers

They used to offer a 30-day (or maybe it was even 90) free trial license for their compilers. I'd been meaning to sign up for one of those, but kept putting it off until I knew I'd have enough free time in the following 30 (or 90) days to put them to good use. I don't see the trial offer any more. I...

Re: Installing Firefox on Octane. Lots of dependencies.

The tar -xvzf option which is supposed to unzip them says illegal option. Though that is what multiple sites say opens a TGIF file. For what it's worth, that's to be expected on IRIX. The z option (which is what unpacks gzipped files) is for GNU tar. IRIX tar doesn't have it. If you have neko_tar (...
