Re: SGI Fuel with Ryzen 5 2400G?

Very interesting to compare Raion-Fox's and Dodoid's approach. It's hard to know in advance which approach is going to work best with any particular listener. So I'd say it's a good thing we've got guys like these two taking very different approaches to the same situation. Next time around, who kno...

Re: 13w3 to VGA on Octane2

It looks like the same adapter I use on both my Octane (SE graphics) and Indigo2 (Solid Impact) with my SoG-capable monitor and no problems. I doubt Octane2 would be different enough to matter, but I'm can't be 100% certain it'll work with your specific setup. Worth a try, IMHO.

Re: your latest purchase

I recently received a DECstation 5000/125. Fortunately it came complete with an LK401 keyboard and the proprietary little breakout cable to connect it. No mouse or other cables, but I already had a suitable VSXXX-AA mouse and a 3W3-to-BNC monitor cable. I plugged that in to a BNC-to-VGA converter a...

Re: Solaris 11.4 open beta

The situation with the 11.4 beta is worse than I realized. I knew support for the Sparc-based workstations such as the Blade 2500 was dropped when Solaris 11 first came out. But it seems that everything older than the T4 series machines has been dropped as of 11.4 according to the official documenta...

Re: HP-UX compilers

They used to offer a 30-day (or maybe it was even 90) free trial license for their compilers. I'd been meaning to sign up for one of those, but kept putting it off until I knew I'd have enough free time in the following 30 (or 90) days to put them to good use. I don't see the trial offer any more. I...

Re: Installing Firefox on Octane. Lots of dependencies.

The tar -xvzf option which is supposed to unzip them says illegal option. Though that is what multiple sites say opens a TGIF file. For what it's worth, that's to be expected on IRIX. The z option (which is what unpacks gzipped files) is for GNU tar. IRIX tar doesn't have it. If you have neko_tar (...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

I'm interested in just about any system that runs Unix. I try to limit myself to Unix workstations, but a couple of headless servers (Origin 300 and Sun T5240 ... so far) have found homes here. What interests me most are the different approaches that the various vendors took. Whether it's the CPU it...

Re: My Fuel now has a power supply and Dallas chip, but no graphics yet. Can I connect to it over serial?

how do I connect to the machine "headless" to correct video mode eventually? L1 connects via a full-fledged null modem cable and serial-2-usb adaptor using "cu -l /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 38400", but no luck with any of the serial ports I'm not familiar with the Fuel, but on the Origin-s...

Re: Workstation for virtualization of OpenCL workload ?

Well, nobody else has replied yet so I'll toss out an opinion.... Xen can definitely do the graphics pass-through, but you'd need two graphics cards: one for the host (dom0 in Xen terminology) and another to dedicate to your Win10 guest (domU to Xen). You can't share a graphics card in pass-through ...

Re: sgi shutter shades?

I don't think 3D movies were the intended application for shutter glasses on SGIs. Robespierre briefly mentioned viewing OpenGL models. That's how I recall seeing them demonstrated back in the day: for visualization purposes such as viewing models in Pro/Engineer or Catia and similar sorts of things...

Re: DDS tapedrive eats tape

Over on the cctalk mailing list I've seen recommendations for a place called Terry's Rubber Rollers to get parts for fixing various types of tape drive rollers. I have no idea if the one in your DDS drive can be replaced with one of his, but it might be worth looking into if you really want to keep ...

Data General Aviion (m88k) IBM 6150 RT Those two are also on my own wish list. But what I'd really like is one of Intergraph's workstations with their Clipper CPU (not the later PC-based stuff) running the CLIX operating system. There are a couple of Intergraph boards on ebay, but that's all I've e...

Re: your latest purchase

I just received a Sun Ultra2 workstation. I think it's got a Creator3D (as opposed to the regular, non-3D Creator) card in there. I don't remember non-creator Ultra 2 systems. Elite3D m6 is available in the horizontal UPA form factor and was supported by Sun in the Ultra2. I've also seen Ultra2s on...

I just received a Sun Ultra2 workstation. I think it's got a Creator3D (as opposed to the regular, non-3D Creator) card in there. In either case it's a series 1 card, so not the greatest graphics but at least it works. Surprisingly even the NVRAM/battery works! The machine came with no hard drive (j...
