Re: your latest purchase

I just received a Sun Ultra2 workstation. I think it's got a Creator3D (as opposed to the regular, non-3D Creator) card in there. I don't remember non-creator Ultra 2 systems. Elite3D m6 is available in the horizontal UPA form factor and was supported by Sun in the Ultra2. I've also seen Ultra2s on...

Re: your latest purchase

I just received a Sun Ultra2 workstation. I think it's got a Creator3D (as opposed to the regular, non-3D Creator) card in there. In either case it's a series 1 card, so not the greatest graphics but at least it works. Surprisingly even the NVRAM/battery works! The machine came with no hard drive (j...

Re: Looking for the src of "ss", an old spreadsheet

The sources for 1.2 beta are available in a couple of places: ⋅  http://ftp-archive.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD-Archive/old-releases/i386/1.0-RELEASE/ports/ss/ ⋅  ftp://134.226.81.13/archive/src/misc/ss_12b/ (which is an IP address that appears to belong to Trinity College Dublin) Bo...

Re: Would you like some Java with that JavaStation?

I'm oddly fond of the way it looks with the "doors" open. There's something about just having them, that shows the designers put some thought into both form and function. They make it look like a well thought out system. (Although I have never used one, so I don't know if that holds up in ...

Re: PPP daemon on IRIX?

IRIX even provides a GUI for setting up PPP (both incoming and outgoing connections). Launch "System Manager", go to the "Network and Connectivity" section, and select "PPP Manager". Setting it up should all be pretty much self-explanatory from there. There's info in th...

Re: [CraigList] Indigo2 Purple and VW320 local Los Angeles.

There are no drives or sleds shown in the photos of the inside of the Indigo2. Find out if the sleds are available before making an offer. You can't add a hard drive without at least one sled. It's got the mid-range High Impact graphics, so that's worth more than Solid but less than Maximum Impact w...

Re: HP9000 C8000 noise

The C8000 is one of the quietest machines in my collection. It's certainly quieter than any of the SGI machines I own. I think it's roughly on par with my Sun Blade 2500, if you're familiar with the sound of those. It makes sort of a low whooshing sound rather the high-pitched whine that some machin...

Re: OCTANE Demos recorded.

I was looking into getting the personal video option. I saw one a couple on ebay and was worried that buying it if it doesn't come with software would make it useless. Is there software on the neko repository to use it in case it doesn't come with a disc? There are two versions of the necessary sof...

Re: Pretty good start in one go!

I've not turned on the Origins yet. I have a feeling that's going to be a whole ...thing. Judging by the stuff piled on top of the Indys in your photo, it looks like you have one Origin 200 (server) and one Origin Vault (disk enclosure with no CPUs or memory). Keep that in mind when setting them up!

Re: Best workstation to start with?

While none of my systems were free, they were all very cheap. The key is patience and persistence. If you feel you absolutely need and SGI now , then you'll have to pay premium prices to buy from somebody who has what you need in stock. On the other hand, if you can wait and watch ebay (and similar ...

Re: Mini-PC fit in an SGI hard drive bay?

and, correct me if I'm wrong, the Octane was designed to cool (or transfer heat out of) this bay anyway. I'm not so sure about that. To me, it looks like the PCI card cage handles its own cooling. There's a small fan at the inner end, and the other end of the cage protrudes from the back of the Oct...

Re: Apple Cinema Display 30" on DCD V12?

I'd be surprised if it worked. To get to that high a resolution (2560x1600 for the 30" Apple Cinema Display) you need dual-link DVI. The specs say the monitor will fall back to 1280x800 with a single-link DVI connection. Unfortunately, single-link DVI is all you'll get out of the V12, with or w...

Re: Your first SGI encounter

I'd read about Indys, Indigo2s, and especially remember the article about the R8000 CPU in Byte Magazine in the 1990s. But I think the first time I saw an SGI in action in person was during the International Symposium on Robotics in Montreal in May, 2000. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the ne...

Here's my newest project. 1994 Green Mitsubishi 3000GT (Jade Fox) [...] But I've wanted one of these for decades. Congratulations on getting an awesome car! I think everyone I knew wanted one of those (well, actually it's Dodge Stealth twin) back in the day. Good luck with the project, and I hope y...
