Re: WTB: SGI monitor like GDM-17E21 or GDM-2011P or similar

I have two granite SGI branded 20" trinitrons. I am located in new york though, and I know shipping is the killer on these things. Depends on how bad you want one, and if you end up finding one locally? I know it does 1600x1200 at just low enough refresh to get below the pixel clock bug on V6/V8.

Re: LOL

come on guys, this is literally the last good place on the net for us who appreciate the golden age of UNIX workstations/servers to continue our hobby and interests. Without a way to make some use of our old hardware, there is not much left but to use them as decorations, and keep them dusted and po...

Re: Possible clone Sparc Station 5 hdd?

You can attach two SCA disks internally in the SS5 actually, it has a dual port backplane. If you do not have a second disk carrier/tray, you can just push the disk into place on the SCA connector for enough time to clone the system disk. You just need to support it with something that will keep it ...

Re: WTB: Dual VPro XIO Carrier (Octane)

Woaaa, awesome! Can't believe one turned up!! Very happy for you! Hope you are filling it with dual V12's !! I never bothered to do anything else with my Dual V8 configuration, but yes I am a little jealous of the proper Carrier, for sure.

Re: Possible clone Sparcultra 5 hdd?

Sure, unfortunately, unlike the ultra 1 and 2, and earlier sparc's, that ultra 5 actually has an IDE bus onboard. So yes, you can get the most modern EIDE disk you can find and install it. Or I believe you could install a SCSI adapter in a PCI slot, and possibly use an external SCSI disk that would ...

Re: WTB: Dual VPro XIO Carrier (Octane)

oh boy rare as hens teeth... I just hacked together a lock lever on the second vpro, been running with two V8's for years like that. Once its installed its really a non issue, if it is locked in place, I am comfortable moving the machine around. There are some dual carriers out there, but I would be...

Re: WTB: Sun Ultra 60

Ehh, take a look at a blade 1000 / ultra 80 case interior, and the chassis overall design is much more reminiscent of a older sun workstation to me. The Ultra 25 was the first sun workstation to have an intel cpu option, and it looks like ATX form factor and power supply. Kind of like the difference...

Re: WTB: Sun Ultra 60

I agree, I would have almost preferred an ultra 80 because of the old school color scheme, and support for QUAD cpus. Theres a soft place in my heart for the off white and purple of old suns. The mid span ultras did have the bunk internal IDE bus though for system disks, I dont want those lol. Any r...

Re: WTB: Sun Ultra 60

I have a blade 1000, dual 800Mhz UltraSparc III or something like that. It has Xvr-1000 graphics. Its the updated/latest version of the Ultra 80 chassis, which was the larger cousin of the Ultra 60. I don't know if that helps you? or if you have some specific need for the 60 and elite 3d due to soft...

Re: A stack of Acclaim Entertainment's Indy's are about to hit ebay.

I am a little confused by all this. How could one be so concerned about the legal ramifications of releasing the contents of the machines to the public, but then turn around and profit handsomely from the commercial sale of the machine, with the contents specifically listed to boost the value of the...

Re: HP(e) buys SGI for US$275MM

You know, its nice, that's why I use my SGI's. When I open up a piece of software on my Octane, its ready to go just about instantly. For the programs it does run, it does a much better job than a modern PC. Even with the limited I/O bandwidth to disk, which seems to be the limiting factor, the soft...

Wow, awesome video packed full of useful information. Reaaaaallly hard to follow though with your high speed narration. Pleaseeee slow it down a little more in future videos, I actually had to slow down the playback to be able to follow what you were saying. There was so much information packed into...

Re: Sun patches... SOL w/Oracle?

I spent much of my youth working with sun machines in labs at the university here, so the sparc platform really has a special place in my heart. Really wonderful hardware and software all around, very dependable and always well designed. I loved working with them, and the scientists in the labs alwa...
