Monitor Altix 350 environment from the OS?

We just powered up our Altix 350 (after being off for some time) recently. It is, due to the broom closet it sits in, running hot (yes, I know it should not be in a broom closet. not my choice). I know we can monitor the temp, fan speed, etc, from the console - is there any way to do it from the OS ...

Re: Altix 350: buyer's questions

I haven't confirmed this myself, but our SGI rep had told us that Altix nodes fit only in Altix racks. So if you bought 8 Altix nodes, it might be a bear to have to stack them on a table. Thankfully the A350 nodes at least plug in to the wall, our other Altix is an A3700 which has its own power supp...

Re: Fuel no longer wants to boot - blinking white light

Does this system now reboot cleanly or, having got it back up, have you just left it on? For now, I'm just leaving it on. Its main role in life is as NIS master for our network. Being as the NIS slave is currently dependent on a UPS that is - to put it lightly - on the fritz, this is the most stabl...

Re: Altix 3700 4CPU 4GB Debian 6

I'd going to ask you a question that is probably dumb to the point of nearly suicidal. We have a similar setup here, a small Altix 3700 (in our case in its own "short" rack, 12 CPU setup) and a 350 (in a "tall" rack, 16 CPU setup). Have you ever tried to numalink them together to...

Re: Fuel no longer wants to boot - blinking white light

Nevermind, I got it to work now. I don't know why my first three tries at null modem connection failed and the fourth one worked, but I eventually pulled it off. I started it with the null modem attached, and then I was able to tell it to start up when it gave me the text menu. It booted up thinking...

Fuel no longer wants to boot - blinking white light

I have an SGI Fuel that unfortunately went down in an uncivilized manner (by way of power failure) last weekend. Now I can't get it to boot in the same way it used to. When I attempt to power it up, I get the solid red light for ~5-10 seconds, followed by the blinking white light that never changes ...

Re: Fuel uptime record vs power interruption...

For right now I'm the only user of our SGIs >90% of the time so I won't be setting up nekoware at the moment. If you can answer, what are all those SGIs being used for? Be as vague or specific as you like or can be. I'm just curious - I like to know what they're being used for at those sites where ...

Re: Fuel uptime record vs power interruption...

I can't rule out that I am looking in the wrong place to find the version of IRIX running on this system; but when I log in it tells me it is running 6.5 IP35. "uname -aR" should do the trick. System responds telling me it is running 6.5.23m. thanks! If the version of IRIX on your Fuels p...

Re: Fuel uptime record vs power interruption...

Updates? You mean you can update IRIX? Nah, we don't do that around here ... :D Ok, but even then, the first IRIX release that included hardware support for the Fuel was 6.5.17, released in August 2002 , which is still shy of 4000+ days. I can't rule out that I am looking in the wrong place to find...

Re: Fuel uptime record vs power interruption...

*OK, the 4,000 isn't quite accurate. The previous time it booted, it had a very wrong - as in several years wrong - date that was corrected while it was running. System then thought that it had been running since the date it had before time correction all the way through. Indeed, I have not even be...

Fuel uptime record vs power interruption...

One of my Fuel workstations was reporting over 4,000* days uptime (as per the uptime command) a while ago. Unfortunately there was a power hiccup (possibly a double-hiccup) at work the weekend before last and it couldn't hold on. *OK, the 4,000 isn't quite accurate. The previous time it booted, it h...

A very slow-booting Fuel (NFS problem?)

I have a Fuel on my network that can take an hour or more to boot, due to problems it seems to have finding NFS shares. The shares in particular it is looking for come from our SGI Altix running SLES 10; the Fuel in question will give a screen full of NFS errors before it finally gives up and procee...

Re: Rebuilding Altix mdadm arrays (again) - SOLVED

After some additional poking around, I seem to have solved the problem and now my arrays are working again, with the data intact. As I write this, they are re-rebuilding, but accessible while they are doing that. Poking around for information on rebuilding mdadm arrays eventually lead me to <a blog ...
