Re: name your SGI?

Anybody else typically rename a machine when they redo the OS install? Usually only with the very first install when I get them - after that, they keep their names (with very few exceptions over the past years). By now, they even all have a sticker with their name on it - for me, the connection &qu...

Re: Science books of a decade?

For most in their thirties and younger, UNIX machines weren't the first computers we saw, let alone used. I think you may safely extend that to "early fourties", at least. Falling into that group, Unix machines were - chronologically - pretty much the last computers I encountered "fo...

Re: What SUN hardware do we have?

You wouldn't happen to have any *extra* optical mouse mats would you? I have 2-3 optical mice but no pads which leaves me stuck with ball mice X.x. Not really, I'm afraid - with the extras, I just about have a pad for each of the mice I have (and some of them are already worn/scratched), sorry. Not...

Re: What SUN hardware do we have?

While I have updated my sig, I haven't mentioned it here yet... This year brought a significant expansion of my Sun collection: 1) Earlier this year, someone in the town next to mine gave away a Sparcstation Classic and a U1/170 for free, which I duly collected... 2) When the sun4zoo in Germany clos...

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

Hm - does a lowly Digital Multia VX40 count? Still waiting for some TLC (battery dead), though, since I pulled it out of a dumpster (the same one I got my two I2 from...) about a year ago.

Other than that I only have the two HP Kayak PCs (XM600/XU800)... 8-)

Re: Damaged Octane...

Like I promised here is the photo of the damaged female connector. [...] I'm wondering why only the small Pinholes so extreme damaged and not the flat holes too. Hm - looking at this photo I would consider taking a sharp knife (scalpel or suchlike) and very carefully remove some of the plastic debr...

Re: IP30 Lessons Learned So Far

Borrowed a CDROM from a local SGI user and installed from the 6.5.24 set I have. I note that I can't get the system to recognise the CD's I burned of the SGI freeware collection. The icon shows a cd in the drive but never gives the little upper icon indicating that I can open it up to copy the file...

Re: Interesting vintage Sun gear on New Jersey Craigslist

IPX is a nice little box (so is the LX, provided they're both maxed out with RAM), but $100 seems a bit pricy when you consider usability. If it were a bit wider range (say a IPX or LX and an SLC and a Sun3/80) then that would be more interesting. Pricing differences between countries/regions never...

Re: 17" Granite SGI GDM17E11 Monitor - eBay

Yeah, mine came with my SS5, its labeled 1994. Heavy as a tank, but still has super crisp image. I rather like the squared off shape of the monitor's case, it goes well with sun pizzabox stuff. The 17E10 (Sun version) I had in use wasn't so hot anymore and I didn't seem to work with my SGIs, so I r...

Re: Soccer world-championship

As far as I am concerned: Anyone may win, as long as the Netherlands get kicked out as soon as possible. I couldn't care less about football and this country is going crazy while the championship is on - so the sooner the national team is gone from the competition, the sooner the country can return ...

Re: Any other pizza box fans out there? My SS20..

He, he - lots of pizza box lovers here, it seems... Same here - my first contact at the time was with the lunch box systems (IPX/Classic/LX), but for some reason the SS5 and SS20 always fascinated me. When I shrunk down my collection a few years back, all sun4[cm] except an SS20 and an IPX went, bot...
