Re: Weird Cherokee PSU noise

Could be the inductors there then. Usually they're varnished in production to prevent ultrasonic vibration which causes squeaking noises in audible frequencies. Over time the coils may break loose and start to move a bit. Coil whine is annoying but doesn't mean anything's wrong. Of course that doesn...

Re: Weird Cherokee PSU noise

Mine made the same noise. I'm pretty sure it's just the PSU fan being pwm'd to a low speed - eventually it would heat up, go faster and go away. If you hook up the fan directly to a 12v supply it's nice and smooth but very loud and will cause a tornado. Strobing harmonics are a tough problem to solv...

Re: New Tezro owner

Many thanks! I've booted without IO9 to the same errors. The midplane really doesn't have any stuff on it besides the L1 and the two PIC PCI<>XIO bridges. I'm not really familiar enough with the IP35 architecture to infer more.

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

The blown tant cap's value is not critical, 33uf will work just as fine as 10uf. More important is the completely missing ptc/polyswitch. The sequence of events was: 1. Tantalum blew due to stress and heat/old age, thus causing the ptc to desolder itself due to extreme heat 2. Unkown short on pcb du...

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Another problem that commonly occured on rear projection CRT is the glycol coolant for each tube would fog up as it broke down under years of heat. This is why many rear projection TVs are blurry or foggy. You can drain the coolant and put in new stuff and have a nice crystal clear tube again. I'm n...

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Speaking from expreince, CRT projectors are inferior in every practical sense. Incredibly heavy, huge, not as bright. The first time you spend 2 hours tweaking convergence it's not bad, it's when you bump the projector or move it in any way you get to repeat the process again. You may end up buildin...

Re: New Tezro owner

The backplane side, which has a Y-shaped split contact. The nodeboard has flat bladed contacts. Putting in original 2x800 just spews pci/io sanity errors imediately on PROM boot. Back to 4x700 which at least boots prom consistently: POD diags fail: A 000 001c01: POD SysCt Dex> dgxbow A 000 001c01: A...

Re: New Tezro owner

Yup, reseated several times. Now that you mention it, I did plugin a NEC USB PCI card which was working somewhat before I had trouble. I am running the barebones configuration now. I neglected to mention, in the process of finding the initial issue, I was getting dumped to the exception handler rand...

Re: New Tezro owner

Left it running for a few hours one day with a GL demo running. Ever since then it's been seriously flaky. It posts thru console now but is completely unable to find Odyssey or IO9! So it can't do anything. Am I missing some setenv (I did resetenv already) that will allow it to bring those things ba...

I tried a bit ago and only got 6gb to download. Many files throw errors.
There are symlinks and so they may be confusing your ftp client.

Re: Tezro: 4x800Mhz | 8GB | V12 | DCD | 10GbE | SAS | USB | RAD

The PSU fan does indeed cause a great deal of the typical Tezro racket. After replacing it's a much more tolerable level. It's also pretty easy to do and not very invasive. You will need to rewire a 3-pin PC fan to change the position of the power, ground and tach signals to match that of the custom...

Set a custom login screen background for xdm

It's mentioned in the wiki, though nobody has ever mentioned it working. Even creating Xsetup with exe permissions didn't do anything. http://nekochan.net/wiki/IRIX_Installation_and_Customization#Custom_background_on_login_screen My solution: 1. Open /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xlogin 2. Under the XAUTHORITY l...

Re: New Tezro owner

Thanks John for the offer. Before you posted I made a big ebay purchase for a bunch of this stuff. Picked up a 146gb 15k and 300gb 10k. The 4x700 is working fine in the Tezro, 8MB 350MHz L2 instead of 4MB 400mhz L2. Might want to offload the old nodeboard once things are running and I can do some co...
