Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

I'll take the security risk, I need compiles to be as fast as possible :D Typical fpga compile is between 3 to 5 minutes for me. I have the fastest singlethreaded proc I can get my hands on (6700k) and not looking forward to seeing times get longer. Guess I can always OC...

Re: Imwheel for Irix- ported! download link in thread

Wow many thanks, I tried to find a working archive for a couple weeks and gave up. I'll give it a try. Very much looking forward to have scrolllwheel support in the file explorer.

To be fair, current Intel chips have essentially identical single-thread perf to their predecessors from 3 years ago

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Still got a lot of work to do, but come a long way. Sorry I can't let the cat out of the bag quite yet but it's card for my octane/tezro. If anyone has experience writing PCI drivers for Irix, I'd be very interested to hear more info. RIght now my plan is to develop a WIn32 driver first. http://retr...

Looking for a Ultra64 GIO board for Indy, but that's pretty much impossible so I will just make my own :D

Re: Murasaki, my Tezro (Quad 700, 8GB)

Tezro has a quite a bit of thermal mass, i.e. it takes at least 10-20minutes of sustained work for it to start increasing, but the fans then do start spooling up faster. They never really slow back down either, since there is so much static consumption :) All fans running full tilt is a scary sound ...

Re: your latest purchase

The bottom picture, the seller is renew_electronics3 and I got one of their Octane2 units as a parts donor. It was quite poorly packed and arrived with the PSU handle completely broken off. Luckily it was otherwise intact (easy-out and new bolts should fix it)

Re: Weird Cherokee PSU noise

Could be the inductors there then. Usually they're varnished in production to prevent ultrasonic vibration which causes squeaking noises in audible frequencies. Over time the coils may break loose and start to move a bit. Coil whine is annoying but doesn't mean anything's wrong. Of course that doesn...

Re: Weird Cherokee PSU noise

Mine made the same noise. I'm pretty sure it's just the PSU fan being pwm'd to a low speed - eventually it would heat up, go faster and go away. If you hook up the fan directly to a 12v supply it's nice and smooth but very loud and will cause a tornado. Strobing harmonics are a tough problem to solv...

Re: New Tezro owner

Many thanks! I've booted without IO9 to the same errors. The midplane really doesn't have any stuff on it besides the L1 and the two PIC PCI<>XIO bridges. I'm not really familiar enough with the IP35 architecture to infer more.

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

The blown tant cap's value is not critical, 33uf will work just as fine as 10uf. More important is the completely missing ptc/polyswitch. The sequence of events was: 1. Tantalum blew due to stress and heat/old age, thus causing the ptc to desolder itself due to extreme heat 2. Unkown short on pcb du...

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Another problem that commonly occured on rear projection CRT is the glycol coolant for each tube would fog up as it broke down under years of heat. This is why many rear projection TVs are blurry or foggy. You can drain the coolant and put in new stuff and have a nice crystal clear tube again. I'm n...

Re: CRT Projector for Bedroom Entertainment Setup?

Speaking from expreince, CRT projectors are inferior in every practical sense. Incredibly heavy, huge, not as bright. The first time you spend 2 hours tweaking convergence it's not bad, it's when you bump the projector or move it in any way you get to repeat the process again. You may end up buildin...
