Re: NIS Password format

I just decided to change the password format to DES on the FreeBSD boxes. Easier, but still a pain in the ass. That's the only way to get IRIX to grok your passwords anyway. And you need to set UNSECURE in /var/yp/`domainname`Makefile as well. Now I'd suggest defining a specific login class for the...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

I usually always have at least one SGI system powered on, but not one of the few still running IRIX.

Yes, that's the most annoying thing with the 164SX and 164LX.

Hamei has strong opinions and is more than willing to share them with colorful language, but you can nevertheless hold a discussion with him. ivelegacy/YM8809/whatever tends to always be in write-only mode, only reads what he wants to read. It's difficult to have a conversation when someone is not l...

Re: your latest purchase

A country with two different voltages for household outlets would be quite odd. Fortunately Japan isn't so strange, it uses 100V throughout, but with two different frequencies (60 Hz in the west, 50 Hz in the east). A 16% difference in frequency is much less of a problem than 100% difference in vol...

Re: your latest purchase

I haven't plugged it in yet because even though I was told it should be fine, I'm super nervous about blowing the PSU on a computer I had to have shipped from Japan as I have no step-down transformer... Since half Japan runs with ~120V and the other half with ~220V, japanese PSU are usually autosen...

Re: Christmas in August if you are in Montreal/Canada – sale of SGI O2, Octane2, ONYX RE2 and Origin2K deskside

I happen to have a cousin in Montreal, but I haven't been in there in four years so... "By the way, now you have 2 kids so I assume you have a truck as well? Do you have a spare room to keep a few computers for me? I'll pick up between now and next summer." Now that's evil. Everyone knows...

Re: Indy or O2 for hostile-heat environment

Another point to consider is the disk drive. Assuming the machine is not diskless, the indy/challenge will require a narrow SCSI disk, which are hard to get by nowadays and are limited in capacity, while the O2 will use SCA disks, allowing for more modern (larger capacity, lower power consumption) d...

I currently have a far more enjoyable tech social time posting to OCN, toms, AT, and numerous other sites about PC stuff, which given my original SGI obsession is just ridiculous. Have you considered browsing the forum with a little filtering ( http://forums.nekochan.net/ucp.php?i=zebra&mode=fo...

Unfortunatelly not in my archives.

100204 is only a text file documenting adb commands.

Re: WTB PS2 Keyboard/Mouse

SGI MIPS computers requires keyboards that fully implement the PS/2 keyboard specification. Most keyboards do not. To be more precise, IRIX runs PS/2 keyboard in scancode set #3, which nothing but IBM PS/2 computers BIOSes really care about. PS/2 keyboards from the first half of the '90s will usual...
