Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Ouch. Sprite, the canonical definition of unusability.

Although that on gxemul it might actually run faster than on the original hardware, and make you feel less miserable.

git commit -p and git rebase -i are your friends. And your foes, too.

Re: R5000PC to R5000SC?

On the Indy, the external cache controller of the R5000 is never used - the secondary cache in R5000SC (and R4600SC) processor boards is a write-through cache specific to Indy, with specific handling in IRIX. I don't know how the PROM detects that the secondary cache is present on such modules. It m...

Re: IRIX Source code

If you dig around in old Linux kernel releases, like 2.4.18 and 2.5.70, you'll find buried under arch/ia64/*, a *lot* of code that is very "verbose" and the coding style and formatting completely different from the rest of the code in Linux. Don't you mean 2.5.69? Most of the SN2 code got...

Re: Best workstation to start with?

Heh, maybe I have a better experience of O2s as my 200MHz R5000 system was significantly quicker than my earlier 133MHz R4600 Indy that I had before :) The R4600 Indy module comes with either no L2 cache or 512KB write-through cache. The 200MHz R5000 O2 module comes with 1MB write-back L2 cache. Th...

Indeed, before opening that thread I thought it would be about the MicroVAX 2000.

Re: NIS Password format

I just decided to change the password format to DES on the FreeBSD boxes. Easier, but still a pain in the ass. That's the only way to get IRIX to grok your passwords anyway. And you need to set UNSECURE in /var/yp/`domainname`Makefile as well. Now I'd suggest defining a specific login class for the...

I usually always have at least one SGI system powered on, but not one of the few still running IRIX.

Hamei has strong opinions and is more than willing to share them with colorful language, but you can nevertheless hold a discussion with him. ivelegacy/YM8809/whatever tends to always be in write-only mode, only reads what he wants to read. It's difficult to have a conversation when someone is not l...
