Re: My latest in deep personal stupidity...

Even if X isn't working, you should still be able to remotely log in over the network, or use the serial console. From a regular shell prompt shut down the Xserver with /usr/gfx/stopgfx, copy the backup files into place, and then restart X with /usr/gfx/startgfx.

As the recipient of this particular package, I can confirm that the contents were in perfect shape when they arrived. 8-)

Oh good point, I didn't even think that he might have meant the drive sled.

Re: WTB Indigo2 Teal Feet/stands or cdrom tray/drive

You may already know this, but the CD tray is just a standard CD caddy that was once common to many early drives. There isn't anything specific to the Indigo2's drive. I picked up a generic caddy cheap from Ebay that works great.

Re: Too many beers? IBM PS/2 Model 70 MCA

I've still got my 286 based PS/2 System 50z, I think it still works, haven't powered it up in a few years... What's running on it Vishnu? If I recall correctly from back when the last glaciation was melting, it's Windows for Workgroups on top of DOS 8.0... Actually it would more likely have...

Re: IR4 fill rate

Never mind, I think I figured it out. It turns out that ircombine automatically selects the deepest pixel depth that fits within the selected hardware. For IR3 at 3840x1080 this is Small, for IR4 it's X-Large. Manually changing pixel depth to Small (through Edit globals... ) results in the same pred...

IR4 fill rate

I was playing around with ircombine for different hardware configurations and ran across something unexpected. I've known for a while that my twin 1920x1080 video format uses enough memory bandwidth to reduce the effective pixel fill rate of my 2xRM10 IR3 pipe by about 19%: ir3_2rm.jpg Changing the ...

Re: Onyx2 IR3 120v power possible?

I just swap the cord, the power supply automatically detects the input voltage and adjusts accordingly. I use two off-the-shelf cords, my 120V one is a NEMA5-15P to IEC C19 cord, and my 240V one is a NEMA L6-20P to IEC C19 cord made by HP for its server gear. I've never bothered to ohm out the pins ...

Re: How to measure time?

I was one of those kids who always wore a watch starting in junior high. But about 5 years ago my trusty 20 year-old Pulsar died and I just started using my mobile phone. About a year and a half ago I had the opportunity to get a nice watch for "free" (it was an award from work) so I start...

Re: Onyx2 Deskside, 4x400MHz R12K, IR3, 8GB RAM

What are you planning to do with your Onyx2 Deskside? I get asked this question a lot. :P Whenever someone sees it in my office they always ask what I use it for. Several months ago I acquired a nice Crystal Eyes set with an emitter and 4 pairs of glasses that I've been meaning to hook up. I want t...

Re: Onyx2 MSC weirdness

Well, I figured out how to use sn0msc at least. It was actually in front of my face on the man page. sn0msc -c /hw/module/1/elsc/controller "fan h" My MSC responded to commands through this utility, so its command interpreter seems to work. Thinking that maybe I changed a NVRAM or P...

Re: Onyx2 Deskside, 4x400MHz R12K, IR3, 8GB RAM

I actually upgraded this machine quite a while ago but forgot to post updated hinv and gfxinfo dumps. My Onyx2 is now a full IR3 machine and runs twin 1920x1080 displays (NEC EA232WMi). It also has PCI gigabit ethernet in a shoebox. Power consumption while idle is now ~900W and just over 1kW with al...

Re: Onyx2 IR3 120v power possible?

OK, I found my Kill-a-Watt, dug out my old 120V power cord, and I have some measurements for you. My deskside Onyx2 with 4x 400MHz R12Ks, 8GB RAM, and full IR3 graphics (GE16, 2x RM10-256, DG5-2) draws 1.02kVA (about 970W) at peak load. This is only 8.5A on 120V, which leaves plenty of margin even o...

Re: Onyx2 IR3 120v power possible?

Yes, I've run mine a bit over the official specifications on 120V without any trouble. Mine is on 240V now as I've loaded my system up with RAM, hard drives, gigabit LAN, dual RMs, etc., and this provided a dedicated circuit for my Onxy2. There isn't anything about the system that prevents you from ...

Onyx2 MSC weirdness

For some time now I've been unable to connect to the MSC on my Onyx2 deskside through either the DIN-8 or the auxiliary DB-9 serial ports. The system seems to work fine otherwise--it boots up and the MSC display reaches POM1C, the serial console on tty1 works as expected, I can start the system and ...
